Isn't that perception mainly fueled by the fact that his position cannot be labled YES or NO? (and the republican lie machine ) My understanding of the issue is that he does not want to make any laws prohibiting outsourcing, but he does want to change tax laws that currently create incentives for outsourcing. Sounds like a great position to me! More money in the coffers to fund our imperialism , more of it coming from those who make money by sending US dollars out of the country.

I posit that if Kerry were to have shown up, that one of those in Will's list would have voted the other way, to keep the benefits tanked. You could argue that Kerry should fly all around the country to try to counter every Repub dirty trick, but I think that might be a little impractical. Kerry here is banking on the intelligence of the voters to see through this transparent ploy. Also, is that all you got? No more examples of Kerry flip-waffling? Seems like you've been making that claim for longer than a day. Or are you like those lying politicians, who figure that if you just say something enough it will eventually be accepted truth?

me too. I've only used it once or twice but it seemed to work OK. Adding a chest strap is definitely something I figured I had to do after one trip. It's perfect for a summit pack since it's so damn light and folds up into nothing. It'll work for a dayclimb pack, but with its minimal accoutrements, you sacrifice a lot of bells and whistles that would be nice for those dayclimbs when you're not worried about 10 extra ounces.

With a newbie hiker, you can greatly increase your odds by making sure that you carry as much as possible; i.e. all community gear like tent, cooking stuff, food. Depending on the pride of the newbie hiker it can also be helpful to carry a lot of their personal stuff too if they are open to that. Best not to inform the newbie hiker of that beforehand though as newbie hikers tend to bring way too much personal shit.

This thread has brought out all sorts of interesting tangents, but to more directly answer CBS's orginal specific question: I have never seen climbers bringing along pads protect against ground fall on roped lead climbs at cragging areas. Maybe I don't get out enough though, and I don't really tend to pay much attention to other people. I'm pretty self-absorbed.

With Durrance as a notable exception, most pitches are sustained and long. So bringing a very large rack is recommended.
