  1. Holy shit what a cluster!! People, if there are multiple parties waiting for this climb, try it one pitch with a 60. I'm pretty sure it'll make it. Last month I was able to rap from the second set of anchors (above the bulge) with a 60m, so I would think it would go as a single pitch. I've climbed the whole thing in one pitch with a 50m.
  2. Yes, cman is definitely not a "friend of the Tooth". GD, on my way out I passed this guy coming up the Snow Lake trail, apparently laboring intensely in the hot sun, with long rainpants and long-sleeve dark-blue polypro. Good size backpack too, and treking poles. Looked mighty uncomfortable. I think I was the one hiking way too fast though. cool pic jja!
  3. me too! That's one crazy building.

    chuckle thread

Just thought I'd put up a little counter-thread to the peeve thread. Peeves are usually defined as things that really bug some people for some reason, but other than the needle in the brain, won't really cause any major damage to anyone. So what about the chuckles you get from other people being peeved about inconsequential things? Are you into shadenfreude? What hot chick out there wouldn't love having Klenke take her out to a restaurant just to watch as his brain slowly boils over the foil-wrapped butter, . Who among you would NOT like to be standing behind Gary Ingvy to witness 10 minutes of antsy fidgeting turn to full on body twitching by the time the 3rd person in front of him decides to pay with a check? Just a thought. Any good stories of witnessing people making much ado over nothing? Anybody out there ever intentionally attempted to aggravate the situation? Hope everyone likes the little green post icon guy I decided to use for this thread
  6. Bush said something to the effect of "he did a great job". This administration's absolute refusal to publicly admit to messing up anything has cost them their chance to scapegoat the one guy that could conceivably be blamed for some of their high-profile failures (and is a Clinton apointee to boot!). Interesting.
  7. It's a good workout. It's fun. It's a good excuse to get outdoors for a few hours. Beats jogging in town.
  8. Went up for a lap on Der Tooth yesterday morning (conditions quite good right now BTW, easy walking snow, soft enough for safe axe-free glissades too). And Michael Layton, I used my Cinder Cones. They are soaked but worked well. Anyway, that was 3 times this year (so far). Here's a report of my first Tooth send of '04, and I followed that up a couple weeks later with a send that I failed to cheastbeat about. What's your Tooth Count? Keep a running tally in this thread. Fabulous prize for unabashed person with highest credible Tooth Count by year's end.
  9. I like the "thank you" aknowledgment (didn't know it was a NOLS thing). It's very often quite useful to let your partner know that you understood his/her communication. For example, so they don't keep screaming "belay on" while you are working to tear down the anchor. Replying, or ever using, "OK" for any communication can easily be misunderstood since it can mean just about anything. Misunderstandings are usually things you do NOT want in communications between partners on a climb.
  10. That's what that was?! Yeah I got woken up by a rumble or something (you know how that is, when you get woken out of a deep sleep, you know something woke you up, but the details are pretty fuzzy). I was sure enough that it was something as I got up and walked around and made sure everything was where it should be. Crazy!
  11. We found this mexican restaurant one night in a drunken stupor in Watsonville CA. The menu read tacos cervesa cigarillos cafe Never could find that place again.

Voters so disconnected with reality that even though they hate littering will vote for Bush. "Mercury! It's what's for dinner!"

    Peeve thread

I can understand people being protective of their children with respect to other adults disciplining them, but sometimes they gotta try to accurately assess the situation. One time I was at McDonald's in the playland screaming hellbox and I looked up from whatever I was trying to read and saw some bigger kid sitting on my son's chest and taunting him while my son was losing it (scared). So I run over there and lift the kid off of mine and we go back to our table and get calmed down. A while later some irate grandma is bitchin' at me for scaring her kid! For lifting him I guess . Tough luck lady. I am such a bully. Corollary on those who don't park between the white lines. What about those stupid parking lots that assume everyone has an '86 Civic or something? REI to name one place, the pool over by my house for another. We do not have a giant car (it is a Buick, but it's not THAT big), and it barely fits in those spots. If someone tries to park an SUV anywhere around, fuggedaboutit, you're climbing out the sunroof.
  16. I think it's pretty funny that for a long time now people bitch about out-of-control dogs and threaten to kill dogs and some tough guy or sensitive dog lover responds with, "you should shoot the owner, not the dogs, it wasn't their fault, blah blah blah". So now someone has! And so now, you tough sensitive dog-lover types can respond with, "you should shoot the owner, like that nut in Arizona, blah blah blah"

It diverted us from taking them out in Afghanistan, and ties up our military from reacting to them anywhere other than Iraq. It has lowered our standing in the world to such a low that we have less political power to find Al Qaeda in other countries. All the wonderful PR has bred Al Qaeda recruits and sympathizers.
  21. If the guy was threatened by the dogs, he should have shot the dogs. Course, then he probably would've got in much more trouble.

"It's a take on the idiots who trump up minor flaws and use them to overshadow the greater good." Minor flaws = couple thousand dead or injured americans. Greater good = avenging Bush father, dropping the ball on Al Qaeda and making us all more vulnerable to terrorists "It's a stab at morons who cry about the injustices of Abu Grhaib, and use them as examples of the failures, rather than talk of the good." I have not characterized Abu Grhaib as a failure; rather, as an inevitable consquence of this war. That this war was ever prosecuted is the failure. "It's a call for the naysayers to shut the hell up and do some good, rather than sit within the safety the troops provide and criticize them." We can all do some good if we get us out of there, or at the very least get our incompetent commander in chief out of there. "It's a call for people like you to don a uniform and serve your country," Unless you're over there right now, this sounds pretty damn hollow.

I stand by my comments. Apparently you think there was something more there than an attempt to support the war in Iraq by criticizing those who would decry the problems with it, and by minimizing the damages by comparing it to a much bloodier spectacle. I'm curious, as to what your take on that piece, if you really think that my interpretation is flawed. Please, see if you can conjure up a cliff-note version for me as you seemed to have offered in your condescending way.
