sk Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 I always thaught alpine meant "freaze your ass off" Quote
ChrisT Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 Muffy: It's all in the clothing and gear - think GORE-TEX Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 I always thought alpine meant- cool as fuck, where no cars can drive to, little or no trees and other vegetation grows and sometimes above a glacier. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 They should have used the recycled Kennan Harvey pics out of the Bugs instead Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 The caveman definition of alpine- Snafflehound territory. Of or pertaining to a snaffle's home arrangements (just for layton). Quote
freeclimb9 Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 definition of alpinist: climber who relies on tenacity to slog up technically moderate routes in the mountains? Quote
Dru Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 Or the recycled Kennan Harvey pics from when he was dating Steph Davis mmmmmm? Quote
Dru Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 def of alpinist: M. F. Twight, Steve House, Barry Blachard, Fred Beckey ( i know he climbs desert spires too), Marko Prezelj, JC Lafaille, Voytek Kurtyka, Joe Simpson etc. not alpinist: John Bachar, Chris Sharma, Dave Graham, Alan Watts, John Dunne, Tori Allen, hikers. Dru Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 If desert spires count as "alpine" thenm is it only Colorado/Utah/New Mex spires or does Monkey Face count??????? Quote
Bronco Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 I looked at the online version. It's a helluva lot better than any of the other climbing mags. Maybe the desert spires would be considered "alpine" by gym rats or bolt clippers. Sure it's not the Himalaya but, there is the element of survival on those bigger more remote spires. Quote
Winter Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 If desert spires count as "alpine" thenm is it only Colorado/Utah/New Mex spires or does Monkey Face count??????? That means the DFA is the alpine hardman he always said he was. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 So true, Winter. Hangin' it out in them aiders, 50' out from the belay on nothing but bolts (some of them occasionally mobile and/or sporting homemade hangers!), enduring a long belay in the mouth clipped only into 4x4x3/16 steel angles epoxy-bolted to the rock and showing some signs of rust, running it out on the Panic Point pitch with the ground only a barely-visible blur of desert browns, hundreds and hundreds of feet below ... yes, Dr. Flash Amazing has traversed that vast vertical ocean more than once, and only through masterful skill and barest of luck has he lived to tell about it each time. freeclimb9 Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 is that dude in the photo, like, crying? Quote
iain Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 you would be if you had to carry around that 8 everywhere. Quote
Lambone Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 Notice that he is tied into a staic rope? It's a good thing he stuck that flying leap! Quote
Dru Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 cfotton designed to look like schoeller. just like extra puffy down in arms and torso and none around waist. Quote
COL._Von_Spanker Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 Here's a real alpinist. (Notice the crampons and Ice screws) Quote
Dru Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 she must have fun placing those HB quadcams (ring pull trigger) with gloved fingers. But she's sponsored by SERAC, and hanging off one. pretty good. think I saw her and crank sloper extreme toproping at Baker. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 Not to sound too Trask here, but she looks like she's taking a coochie full of the long meat, with that expression she's got. Quote
