Fairweather Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I heard they scaled it by clutching nubs. "they relied entirely on their own strength and dexterity to ascend by grasping cracks as thin as razor blades and as small as dimes." "They also took physical punishment when their grip would slip, pitching them into long, swinging falls that left them bouncing off the rock face. The tumbles, which they called "taking a whipper," ended in startling jolts from their safety ropes." Quote
Pete_H Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 bizarre media circus indeed! abc news this afternoon reports that two climbers have free-climbed El Capitan -- and I quote: "it had never been done before!" the report is obviously grossly inaccurate. El Cap has been free climbed thousands of times by numerous routes (East Buttress, West Face, Salathe Wall, Nose, etc) should Tommy and Kevin be held accountable for what their agents report? I'd like to be impressed, but I'm too busy being disgusted. Yeah this evil media circusry never would have happened during the purity of the Golden Age. Quote
Drederek Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Well its not like they onsighted it, sheesh! Quote
olyclimber Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 well, theres media circuses and then theres douche circuses. Back to laughing at schizophrenic tutorials i reckon. good luck with that CC. are you talking to yourself? Quote

One thing to be sure of is that those who "do things" can not be responsible for the media coverage that follows them. Quote
ivan Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 it'd be strange indeed to reach the top of el cap to the site of a walmart parking lot - ain't never been up there but been all alone to the sound of crickets - hopefully them hangers on were willing to hump their share'o'shit down? Quote

Back to laughing at schizophrenic tutorials i reckon. good luck with that CC. i feel quite capable of doing both i always get a hoot out of the media covering something i have more intimate knowledge of then they, see? gives you a new perspective on what you hear from then about shit you nothing of Quote

ivan Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 are you allowed to free an old aid line and make it a grade harder? see some topos for the newly freed route calling it grade VII? thought you had to be able to see penguins to get that grade? Quote

Rad Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 Maybe I sounded snide in previous posts. Actually, I find this inspiring on several levels. Let's all get off the computer and go find our own personal Dawn Walls (minus the tweeting film crew) and grow our balls character to epic proportions! Or maybe just watch the Seahawks tear apart the Packers while we pray for enough snow in the mountains to go snowboarding! Quote
ivan Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 i was actually thinking about just going and climbing it this summer - i've had a theme the past few years of proving fat people can still aid up what skinny people just freed Quote
ivan Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 fuksakes, free or aid, getting up el cap is like getting blown by 5 thai hookers at the same time while snorting a 3 inch wide, yard-long line of blow Quote

Bronco Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 The climb was actually reported on ESPN Sportscenter this morning. They said Tommy and Kevin didn't even use "cables". Pretty weird! Quote
Stefan Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 media circus. it might get more humans interested in this climbing thingy. There are some decent short reports where the reporter does use the word "free" and "Dawn Wall" and this is pretty good. Quote

ivan Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 did tommy n' kevin secretly rap-bolt the whole route? Quote
pink Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 did tommy n' kevin secretly rap-bolt the whole route? those guys aren't very good at bolting, so they had Bill Coe come in and do it for them Quote

LUCKY Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Good topic, shows how climbing like other sports has evolved. Climbing access advocate Quote
