Buckshot Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Is there any way of knowing, when you leave Paradise, if you can, for sure, leave the tent in the car and plan on getting a seat at the Muir Shelter? I'd hate to gamble, leave the tent behind and have to slide back to Paradise b/c the hut is full. Quote
keenwesh Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 this time of year not many people are staying up there... is the shelter even open in the winter? Quote
DPS Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 (edited) You can ask the rangers. They keep track of how many climbers are registered and probably have a rough idea of the percentage of of climbers who tent it vs camp in the Muir shelter. Edited January 6, 2012 by DPS Quote
ScaredSilly Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Take a bivy sac - either way you will be happy to have whether in the shelter or not. Quote
jpl Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Why would you want to stay in the shelter. Way more fun and enjoyable to sleep outside. Quote
bistro Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 i have slept in the shelter. it was like sleeping in a freezer. i think it was actually warmer outside that night. that was 2 years ago during late july, if i remembr correctly.incedently, i took a tent with me but wanted to sleep in the shelter, just to be able to say, Hey I did that.It really was a cool experience, literally and physically. you should always try to be prepared for the unexpected,so i would recomend a tent should be part of your gear if you dont use it at least you have a backup plan. think of it this way, it's only a few pounds divided amongst friends. have fun, be safe, expect the unexpected. mattp Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I would not bother with a bivvy sack but a snow shovel would be good. If the Shelter is full, dig a snow cave nearby. Just try not to get your clothes all wet while digging and you'll probably sleep better outside anyway. Quote
DPS Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Why all the hate for the shelter? I prefer it to carrying a tent or sleeping in a cave. To each his own I guess. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Every time I enter the Muir shelter I'm reminded of Van Gogh's "The Potato Eaters"...only its not quite as warm and cheerful. Quote
dougd Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 DPS' advice to ask the Rangers is good. Still, no way of "knowing" "for sure"... If you do end up getting a shelter spot I hope you have good ear plugs. If you want to actually sleep in there that is. Only time I stayed in that shelter was back in '81, two guys were snoring so loud nobody else could sleep. Our summit day started earlier than we wanted but it was cool because we ended up in front of most everyone else on the way up. Coming down was a zoo, there was no avoiding it on the DC... If I had a do over on that climb I'd leave Paradise early and carry a tent up to Ingraham Flats. It's nice up there... d Quote
rob Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I heard that sometimes people smoke pot in the Muir hut, is that true????? Quote
DPS Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I heard that sometimes people smoke pot in the Muir hut, is that true????? Last time I spent the night in the Muir shelter there were six of us, two were former Mt Rainier climbing rangers. I won't out who it was, but one asked if anybody had any pot. Quote
