mountainsloth Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 it is as I feared. Anyone have a spare tonka trucks we could use? Quote
OlympicMtnBoy Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 So what's the cheapest dirk bike out there to haul lazy climbers up closed roads? http://www.powersportsmax.com/product_info.php/products_id/818?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=Dirt%20Bikes ;-) Quote
genepires Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 less than $400 and it fits in the trunk of a honda! Quote
curtveld Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 You guys just need to find a Dtown local that'll rent you their dirt bike or quad! Otherwise I'm guessing about an extra hour of mtn. biking each way to 3OC or Exfo? A longer day but not prohibitive. Any updates on whether the Squire road has new damage? Quote
finian Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 No new damage on the Squire Creek road, but the skinny spot might be a little bit skinnier. Quote
Riley81 Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Clear Creek road is also washed out at about 4-5 miles from the beginning of the road at another major stream channel coming down from Jumbo Mt. This wahsout is about 5 times larger then the first. Debris filled up a ~10 foot diameter culvert. This probably caused the water to overtop and deposit material down the road to the east while scouring out the downhill side of the road. The majority of the damage is to the west of the culvert where the stream now runs. All in all about 500-700 feet of road were destroyed as well as a large culvert being ruined. Quote
curtveld Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 I talked to the FS folks, and the damage is extensive enough that they will be applying for federal flood $, which could mean a year or two until fixed. No fun bearing bad news, but that's what I heard. Quote
shapp Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) I got a proposed action scoping notice in the mail from the USFS indicating they were planning on fixing the clear creek and squire creek roads and a bunch of other stuff. I will read it over more carefully tonight and post more details. Everyone should call or write in there support of these proposed actions. I'll post some more info tonight. OlympicMtnBoy Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Only tangentially related, but here is a great video of what happens when a culvert is too small (like almost all of them on these roads) and gets clogged. Mother earth literally spits this one back up before ejecting it downstream (keep watching): http://www.wmtw.com/r-video/17144859/detail.html Quote
shapp Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 (edited) So I got a project scoping document from the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National forest in the mail yesterday informing of a bunch of projects they intend to do the summer and fall of 2011 extending into 2012. Of particular importance to climbers is they proposed to fix the storm damage on the Clear Creek Rd (access to 3 oclock rock, green giant, exfoliation dome etc), squire creek road (squire creek wall/roan wall etc.) and some stuff on NF Sauk Road (Spring mt and other objectives). The Forest Service is solititing for any public comment on the projects. We should all call, write a letter, or send an email in support of these projects. Specifically, it would be great if you contacted them indicating you really appriciate their attention to these projects, which will allow continued day trip access to several great rock climbing areas, and request that the work be done as soon as feasible in 2011. The project to reference is #3 Darrington District Road Repair (repair currently known winter-damaged sites on roads 2060, 49, 18, and 2040 with reconstruction of road prism, low water ford construction or culvert upgrades. Roads locations: Clear Creek, Squire Creek , NF of the Sauk River and Segelsen Ridge. Contact: Phyllis Reed by April 1, 2011 at 360-436-2332 plreed@fs.fed.us or at Mt Baker-Snoqualmie Natinoal Forest, Darrington Ranger District, 1405 Emens Street, Darrington, WA 98241 Edited March 12, 2011 by shapp Quote

hanman Posted April 6, 2011 Author Posted April 6, 2011 (edited) Good news race fans- Mr. Mitchell (FS Roads Manager)just updated me on the Clear Creek 2060 road. They are currently working (pending snow conditions) on a temporary bypass at the first wash in an effort to reach the big damage at mile 4.1. This temporary bypass may or may not be passable by public use standards, but I think this shows they are willing to at least consider a full repair. Thanks to all who indicated support for this continued access, and to the FS crews and personnel involved!! M.Hanna Edited April 6, 2011 by hanman Quote
hanman Posted May 3, 2011 Author Posted May 3, 2011 2060 temporary bypass in place- blocked by rocks right now, but it looks as though it may open for public use soon-Looks like they were able to save the original culvert Go FS! Quote
keenwesh Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 does this mean you can drive in to 3 o'clock rock again? Quote
hanman Posted May 3, 2011 Author Posted May 3, 2011 No, not yet. But it looks like the FS will be looking at the next damaged area with a repair in mind. Worst case we might need to walk the road for 1.5 miles to get to the 3:00 trailhead Quote
hanman Posted May 9, 2011 Author Posted May 9, 2011 How in the hell did you find out I live in Oso, WA? Quote
Tyson.g Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Trailer park boys is funny stuff. Very Oso or either end of the Loop for that matter. How was the eastside hanman? Quote

Bronco Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20110512/NEWS01/705129812 It appears the MTN Loop might not be opened any time soon. Quote
