AlpineK Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Sorry Pete this thread was lacking an important element. Quote
JayB Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Putting your typically bombastic horseshit about mercantilism aside, the advanced industrialized countries that have done best during the recent expansion of the capitalist global economy are those countries with coherent, forward looking industrial policies, like Germany. Unlike the Great American Globalization Junk Show & Demolition Derby wrought by a political class entirely captured by corporate cash and casino economists, these countries have managed to maintain their middle classes, remain competitive, and keep their democracies intact. Not surprisingly, they also have strong unions. Why don't you go peddle your crap to recent high school graduates on the comments section of the Stranger, Jay. 1. How does your preferred economic policy differ from mercantilism? 2. The policies that you advocate can be found all over Europe. How do you explain the difference in economic performance vs Germany? 3. Germany has actually been engaged in structural reforms to liberalize its economy for a number of years now. Per you, they should thus be underperforming relative to France, Greece, etc - no? 4. Can you quantitatively define what constitutes the middle class and provide empirical evidence that it's disappearing? Quote
mattp Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Hey Jay: what is YOUR argument here? I don't mean to pick you in particular out, but this thread has pages and pages of counterpont without anyone actually stating THEIR position. Seriously: I get it that you think you are smarter than the other guy or j_b thinks he is more fundamentally perceptive than you or whatever it is, (and I could add similarly uncomplimentary and certainly incomplete descriptions of others' roles here)... but what is your actual position? What do YOU think defines the middle class and how does that have to do with any topic of this thread? Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Are you guys trying to make political arguments? Most of what I see here is a bunch of jabs at "the other guy." Seriously. What is your point? Um, yeah, that's what we're doing. It's relaxing. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Tim Lincecum. who is "the freak" that's out of place in this thread? Giants Baby! Quote

How does your preferred economic policy differ from mercantilism? The question is, who cares? If someone jumped every time a Hayekian fruit-loop like you cried "mercantilism!", Germans would still be picking through the rubble of WWII. The same goes for Japan and later the Asian Tigers, and now China. The capitalist state can, does, and should at the very least intervene in the economy on behalf of its citizens to deal with market failure, administer public goods, deal with externalities, regulate, etc. Furthermore, as far as I'm concerned, capitalist states should formulate industrial policies that promote safe, sustainable growth that actually benefits it's people. All countries have industrial policies that, I'm sure to you, just smack of "mercantilism!" (CAFE Standards, nooooo!). The U.S. government has certainly has one (as Dick Cheney Energy Task Force can attest to) it's just been geared to redistribute wealth to the rich, plunder the treasury, and allow corporations to run roughshod over workers in the name of almighty competitiveness. prole Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Meh. Have the Mariners made any moves yet? Quote
AlpineK Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Who cares. Endless chatter about the World Series is more interesting than Dino. The World Series ended last night. I voted two weeks ago. Quote
prole Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 i would say, more accurately, that the majority of people who don't vote are lazy fucks. and you'd likely be wrong. The demographics that vote the least is disenfranchised youth. Youth is the demographics most consistently on the left. Disenfranchised youth? More likely youth doing what youth does... trying to get wasted, laid, or both. And speaking of Germany... [video:youtube] Quote

Jim Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Bill Maher said, "We have a center-right party and a crazy party. Over the last 30 years, the Democrats have moved to the right, and the Republicans have moved into a mental hospital." That about sums it up. But he also said, "Sure, I'm mad at the Democrats. I'm also mad at my cell phone company. But I don't throw away my cell phone cause I'm mad and then rub dog shit on my teeth." We all know this isn't the best situation to be in. So consider this one last reason to get out and vote: Quote

Jim Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Hear ya. But it's not like I've been snoozing. I visit my representatives' office regularly, go to alternate party talks and consider them - what's your viable alternative? Quote
