prole Posted April 13, 2010 Posted April 13, 2010 The field narrowed significantly today when Mike Huckabee decided to remove himself from the short list of legitimate contenders... Huckabee Likens Gay Marriage to Incest, Polygamy WASHINGTON – Mike Huckabee, a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2012, says the effort to allow gays and lesbians to marry is comparable to legalizing incest, polygamy and drug use. Huckabee also told college journalists last week that gay couples should not be permitted to adopt. "Children are not puppies," he said... ...Huckabee told the interviewer that not every group's interests deserve to be accommodated, if their lifestyle is outside of what he called "the ideal."... ...In response to a 1992 questionnaire from The Associated Press, Huckabee, then a Senate candidate in Arkansas, spelled out his opposition to homosexuality, saying it was crucial that the country not "legitimize immorality." "I feel homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle," he wrote, in response to a question about gays in the military. He also advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general public, saying it was necessary to confine "carriers of this plague." As governor, Huckabee supported an Arkansas policy that prevented same-sex couples from serving as foster parents. On gay marriage, he said in an interview, "Marriage has historically never meant anything other than a man and a woman. It has never meant two men, two women, a man and his pet, or a man and a whole herd of pets."--from here. Quote

tvashtarkatena Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 I'd say he just secured the frontrunner slot. Bigots unite! All you have to lose is your election! Quote
Nitrox Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Sounds like Huckabee is qualified to replace Biden. Quote
AlpineK Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Of course there's the obvious candidate [img:center]http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/object3/232/105/n39828197526_8880.jpg[/img] It may bring more action to one of the better Facebook groups. UI Students, Alum, Professors against Sarah Palin Quote
AlpineK Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 She went to about 5 Colleges, but finished her last semester at UI. A degree in communications I think Quote
Fairweather Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Not quite as sad as mommy and daddy spending $$ on out of state tuition for a mathematics degree that was never put to any real use, but, hey, gotta laugh with you on the whole Palin/communications thaang... Quote
AlpineK Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Cheaper than UW tuition, and not quite as out of state as you assume. Quote

JayB Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Smartest money that moveon.org et al could spend would be checks sent directly to the Palin campaign. Quote
prole Posted April 14, 2010 Author Posted April 14, 2010 The Republican positioning of increased financial regulation as Democratic pandering to Wall Street as the basis for GOP opposition to such measures may show that Dumbshits and Elitists could work quite well together for a time. That time being over when Republicans actually have to govern and they need to find a new (old) narrative to justify their corporate cocksucking. Enter: "Economic Freedom". Quote
JayB Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 The most touching article of faith here is the notion that the power that the government amasses to distort commerce won't ultimately be deployed for the benefit of the interests that have the most to gain from having it exercised on their behalf. prole Posted April 14, 2010 Author Posted April 14, 2010 Ah, always with the fear... Yes, the "road to serfdom" is always the philosophical fallback/boogeyman (talk about faith!). Never mind that so many are virtually bound to it already and that the implementation of your prescriptions here of late would consign even more to it. What's it like knowing that the only dynamism left to wring out of late-capitalism is through lowering people's expectations for a "good life", increased environmental exploitation and destruction, more powerful means of control and surveillance, and eroding social institutions? You can only filibuster people with "road to serfdom", "mob rule", "clinical efficiency", and "economic freedom" so much before they realize they're being served a shit sandwich. You might not like Sarah Palin or the Teabaggers much, but you've only the effects of your own economic faith to blame for their existence. Quote

Guess who Uncle Sugar took the best care of in that one. Not the likes of the organic carrot farmer that shuttles his wares to the boutique market in his home-brew biodiesel fueled pickup. BTW, bit dramatic there, what with the "late-capitalism" and all of that. Not even sure Marx would have persisted in singing this tune much beyond the 1890s, but I'm sure he'd be touched by your devotion. Quote
prole Posted April 14, 2010 Author Posted April 14, 2010 Perhaps you're right, capitalism may not be on its last leg yet, but its brief on again/off again relationship with liberal democracy certainly is. Quote
