northvanclimber Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 ah jeez. this sucks! i always loved finding alpinist in my mail. argh.. hey, maybe the US gov't could bail them out?!! Quote
genepires Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 it was only a matter of time before they went under. It cost alot to produce the magazine and without the excessive ads, they have been losing money from the first issue. It was not a big money making project. I think they would have been happy to break even. It was a wealthy man's sponsored project. Quote
AlpineK Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 I admire a magazine that tries to make it on content. Unfortunately the reality is the vast majority of magazines out there are so packed full of adds it becomes difficult to search out the articles when you have to wade through bullshit. Quote

Oh but it was the October 2008 financial crisis that did them in...didn't you get the memo...AKA - IT'S BUSH'S FAULT!!! Quote
jon Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 That's strange. I thought it was the fact they didn't have a solvent stable business model like most companies going under. Quote
olyclimber Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 I suspect that the investor that was floating the magazine saw his fortune change dramatically and thus started evaluating his monetary outflow. Quote
G-spotter Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Dougald McDonald's blog (The Mountain World) has some good analysis but what it comes down to is that they did not have enough subscribers to make money and their sugar-daddy Marc Ewing got tired of covering losses out of pocket. Quote
el jefe Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 i'm just glad i didn't take the bait and get a subscription when they offered that 33% off deal right before going under. $48 or whatever for a single issue of alpininst would have been seriously annoying. Quote
Spiral_Out Posted October 23, 2008 Posted October 23, 2008 From a good source. Apparently they showed up Friday for work and everything was locked up. NO warning. So lame. Pisses me off that i still have to be bombarded by shitty ass wipe rags in the grocery aisle, and now i can't find solace in the only mag im dedicated too. Quote

G-spotter Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 I doubt it. The company to which you subscribed went bankrupt. The new owners bought title to the mag free of debts (such as to you). Quote
John Frieh Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Jeffersonville, Vermont—January 16, 2009—Height of Land Publications (HOL), owners of Backcountry and Telemark Skier Magazines, closed on a deal today that lays the groundwork for the resurrection of Alpinist Magazine. Alpinist, a premium quarterly celebrating mountaineering and the climbing life, closed its doors this fall, just prior to the release of Issue 26. The new owners, HOL, plan to release Issue 26 on March 1, and will honor all current subscriptions. "Alpinist fits perfectly into our family," says HOL president and publisher Jon Howard. "We feel climbers, mountaineers, and backcountry and freeheel skiers all share the same DNA. It's, at times, about being bold; at times about being cautious. Kind of like how we do business." And at HOL, they feel it's a great time to be bold. Jon and HOL partner and Backcountry editor Adam "Howie” Howard are currently in negotiations with the editorial staff at Alpinist to determine who will be at the helm. "We've asked Christian Beckwith to stay on as Editor," Adam says. "I reached him in Mexico where he's doing some non-profit work. After seven years of grinding, he's enjoying some relative downtime. But he's genuinely excited that we're carrying his creation forward. We'll be meeting in person in the next few weeks. Should he not come on full time, Alpinist readers can be assured that someone of comparable skills and pedigree will fill his shoes." Readers can also look forward to the same quality of paper and a large format size. "We want to honor what the Alpinist team has done," Jon says. "It's a piece of art. And we plan keep it that way." Stay tuned to Backcountrymagazine.com and Alpinist.com for more information. Quote
