Weekend_Climberz Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 If someone climbs one of those (or any other route) to be a "hero" or impress others that's their choice but I think in the end their climbing career will be largely unfulfilling. Climb something because you want to... not because you need self validation I seemed to think those who climb for reasons other than enjoyment tend to have much shorter lifespans, much less careers in climbing. I actually find the getting to the top rather anticlimatic, because it is the inbetween that I find the most interesting. This coming from one who backed off a single pitch 5.4 over the weekend. olyclimber Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 you're just a stupid human torturing yourself on some steep piece of earth for no reason. couple this with listening to Joy Division and Skinny Puppy all the time and you can be a real climber. Quote
ashw_justin Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Consider that the total newbie, hiking up the easy route, feels just as hardcore and adventuresome as you do on your uber-hard super-gnar death trap testpiece. Quote
olyclimber Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 and that newbie could be just as tortured on their route as you are on yours. life is beautiful that way. Quote
dt_3pin Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 This House of Sky is unrepeated? Ohmygod! Whoa! Apparently my ascent was the first!!! Quote
Chad_A Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Many climbers seem to feel underconfident to pick a good line without a guidebook author's endorsement or a string of enthusiastic trip reports on cc.com. Good point. I think it's easy to not think outside the box when the way's been paved so many times by others on well-described routes (whether it's on cc.com or a guidebook). I'm going to take that thought with me more often into the mountains. Quote
olyclimber Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 I've heard that SE Mox is a really hard climb. Quote
Dru Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 I don't think you can call it a climb because they didn't summit. Quote
Mike_Gauthier Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Funny how a name, a really good pic, or reputation for whatever reason can make a route that may not be so good, hard, or aesthic. Here's a list of climbs i believe may be "overhyped"... -Thermogenesis I didn't realize there was any hype about this route? A few extreme skiers have asked about skiing it, but... Quote
mattp Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Well, it does have a cool name and every once in a while I hear it come on cc.com as the route to do if you want to die... Quote
Mos_Chillin Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Many climbers seem to feel underconfident to pick a good line without a string of enthusiastic trip reports on cc.com. Yah, right. Big fish, small pond. Not even. Quote
islandclimber Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 Any summer route on Mt. Colonel Foster on Vancouver Island. Horrible pro and some nice rockfall. Half to Full pitch 5.8-5.10 runouts are always fun. The winter routes are pretty sweet tho. Quote
