Overhyped Routes

If someone climbs one of those (or any other route) to be a "hero" or impress others that's their choice but I think in the end their climbing career will be largely unfulfilling.

 

Climb something because you want to... not because you need self validation yoda.gif

 

I seemed to think those who climb for reasons other than enjoyment tend to have much shorter lifespans, much less careers in climbing.

 

I actually find the getting to the top rather anticlimatic, because it is the inbetween that I find the most interesting. This coming from one who backed off a single pitch 5.4 over the weekend. snaf.gif

Many climbers seem to feel underconfident to pick a good line without a guidebook author's endorsement or a string of enthusiastic trip reports on cc.com.

 

Good point. I think it's easy to not think outside the box when the way's been paved so many times by others on well-described routes (whether it's on cc.com or a guidebook).

 

I'm going to take that thought with me more often into the mountains.
