Alpine_Tom Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 It's probably not up to the classics -- Cliffhanger or Vertical Limit, but NOVA has a show about climbing on Denali this coming Tuesday (1/17) In an exploration of extreme medical science, NOVA ascends Alaska's Denali -- aka Mt. McKinley -- to try to solve the mystery of high-altitude deaths on one of the most dangerous mountains on Earth. NOVA chronicles daring mountain rescues and emergency medical evacuations as it accompanies an expedition team of researchers and experts employing the latest NASA technology to investigate the potentially lethal diseases that can attack climbers anywhere in the world. My 8-year-old is a total science nerd, so we'll be watching it. Quote
Dave_Schuldt Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 NOVA has been kinda lame.... Hope this one is good. Quote

whidbey Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 She is hot... The Imax film did it for me... Wanted to place some protection in her! Quote
goatboy Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Curious if any women watched the K2 show? Seemed pretty anti-women, to me . . . - GB Quote
Couloir Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I missed the K2 one, but I saw the Denali one. Interesting. But I kept trying to figure out who the key sponsor was of the expedition. Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 That show was the biggest non-story of all time. Cold and altitude can be detrimental to your health? Nice thesis NOVA! Quote
barkernews Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I thought it was pretty interesting. The photography was excellent, considering the conditions. Anyone know when the K2 story airs again? Quote
John Frieh Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 So the lair is within OPB's broadcast range? Hmmm... Quote
crazy_t Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Hector is a good friend of mine. We were on a trip once, and I was telling him how I had been having trouble because my wife as a non-climber was opposed to the amount of climbing/guiding travel I was doing. He said with a smile "yeah, I've got the same kind of problem. Except Aracelli wants to go to K2 again this year (would have been his 3rd trip there in 4 years or something) and I'm not feeling it as much this year. But she's really pushing for it, it's a real problem..." Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 So the lair is within OPB's broadcast range? Hmmm... OPB as in Oregon Public Broadcasting? NOVA is a wgbh production airing nationally... Quote

foraker Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Female climbers NEVER judge men by their looks, so I totally concur. But you forgot the rule where it's ok for them to do it to us because they aren't oppressing us. Quote
DirtyHarry Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Just saying, woman are as guilty as men on that one. OK, truckdriver? Quote
DirtyHarry Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Yeah, those mountains are so sexist. Fucking redneck mountains!! Quote
crazy_t Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 My wife got the same vibe from the K2 show, some of the guys were a little cocky. It was clear they were just going in with an edgy angle to stir the pot a little, and they got a lot of the type of quotes they wanted. It was like their premise was a bit like throwing down the gantlet and seeing if their chosen climber Aracelli might do well and win. Either way, then they were guaranteed a good story, their ass was covered. Pretty nice footage though. I liked that Denali show. Great footage. I thought that the core temperature research was really interesting, compelling. Watching how differently people's bodies reacted and what a difference it made. Quote
kix Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 The extreme nature of Bouldering never gets the recognition or coverage it deserves. Quote

DirtyHarry Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Bouldering can get pretty ugly if you forget the boombox and snacks. Quote
