catbirdseat
Rioting doesn't seem like the most logical way to protest discrimination. Rather, I think it will help ensure it.

Recycled
I'm sure that the 35 hours work week in France created a lot of jobs for under/unemployed hoods. Â France has such a history of legitimate street protests that they have a hard time figuring out how to deal with thugs using riots as a cover for mayhem. Kinda a cultural thing, I believe. TREETOAD
Fresh rioting broke out on the outskirts of Paris overnight as gangs of youths challenged authorities' vows to crack down on urban violence that has plagued the French capital for over a week  It figures that the French would only have fresh rioting each day, none of that stale shit from the day before. Dave_Schuldt
So what did the French think would happen when they brough in a bunch of guest workers to do the dirty jobs. Did they think they would go home? They're stuck with the imagrants and need to encourge them to join society. The French will just have to learn to live with the foregners or the riots will continue. Sadly rioting is the best way to get the polititians attention. KaskadskyjKozak
The Payoff: 30+ years of Socialism  There was a thread on this b-board not too long ago, asking "how long can we stand it in the US, with all this injustice, before we must revolt".  How ironic that the liberal-utopian-socialist posterchild France is the one where the people are revolting.  :-))

mattp
KK, you're just still smarting because they were right about the fact that Saddam wasn't a threat to us, he had no WMD's, an invasion in Iraq was not a part of any war on terror, and it might in fact lead to an increase in terrorism. Â Why don't you save your scorn for the guys responsible for igoring their own intelligence and getting us into this mess?

JayB
I really do think that integration is quite a bit more challenging in a country where national identity and ancestry are still closely interlinked. More challenging still when there's no cultural history of assimilating large numbers of immigrants, let alone large numbers of immigrants who are openly contemptuous and dismissive of the values that your civilization is founded upon, rather than seeing them as ideals to strive for. Â Couple that with a disastrously low birth-rate, a rapidly aging population, and an inflexible labor market hiding behind high tarrifs and subsidies and you've got quite the cluster going on. Hopefully their efforts to integrate the new arrivals succeed, as that's their only hope IMO. Unfortunately, relativistic PC dithering in the place of an impassioned defense of Western values, coupled with unconditional welfare subusidies and a stifling labor market seems like a less-than optimal approach to dealing with immigration. Â The US has its share of problems to deal with, but I'd take ours over theirs any day.
