BradW Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 I'm a starting trad climber looking for nut tool recommendations. This is a cheap and simple piece of gear, but there are a lot of different designs out there so I'm wondering what others have used and liked. Quote
Dru Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 i don't think any climbers out there have had to bail because they were using the wrong brand of nut tool. the one with integral knife could be useful if you need to cut a lot of webbing or if you want to be aron ralston and do surgery with your nut tool. thelawgoddess Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 i like the ushba ti tool. doesn't hurt as much when you're trying to hammer it in with your hand. Quote
Toast Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Actually metolius makes a cool one with a built in biner. It'll save you from having to use one to keep it attached. Quote
fenderfour Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 The Metolius tool has been ground so that the clip end is wider than the hook end, making it easier to get at small (aid climbing) stoppers. Quote
NYC007 Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Omega makes a nice one like the metolius but its about $5 cheaper.. Quote
catbirdseat Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 BD one opens beer I tested my Metolius for the first time yesterday. I mean on a beer bottle. It performed admirably. Quote
snoboy Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Ushba.. BD is good, the DMM one with the hooks on the back end sux. Ed Leeper thinks a lot of his design. Ushba - thin, has a nice flat end to hit, works. disadvantage - it's Ti, so people will think you're a geek for having a ti nutter. Anything opens beer bottles... Quote
IceIceBaby Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 ding dong, long shlong, long dong or whatever....my nuts tool is all iron Quote
thelawgoddess Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 snoboy's right. i always use a biner to open bottles. i forget who taught me that. Quote
JoshK Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 I guess if I was getting a new one, all things being equal, i would get the lightest one I could find. I do like that built in biner one tho. Quote
Squid Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Those pansy-ass gizmos are for posers! Real hard-men don't need built-in 'biners- we stash our nut tools in our ass-cracks. Serves as tp. Light is right, baby. I open beer bottles with my ass-crack, too. Quote
Dru Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 I saw SOMEONE stash some chalk granules in their buttcrack and then take a dip while bouldering just as if they had a chalk bag back there Quote
chirp Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 My old Leeper "Hooker" is one tough unit, as well as being aesthetically pleasing like a fine old machined campagnolo crank removal tool. Quote
billcoe Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 All of the advice so far has been good. DMM also makes a blue handle model which is good. If I had to buy 1: Trango shark. If I did alpine or long routes: Ushba titanium. But I don't have to choose one, so I have all of the tools mentioned except the Metlious, and I climb with 3 people who own that one and it works fine too. It did take me a few days to break my trango tool although it still sort of works. BTW: Joseph has a nice racking sling for his tool you should all check out. ...Real hard-men don't need built-in 'biners- we stash our nut tools in our ass-cracks. Serves as tp. Light is right, baby. John Frieh Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 The grivel one has common bolt head shape cut outs built in so you can tighten loose bolts... I have found this handy from time to time. I generally use a metolius though. Quote
Dr_Crash Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 The DMM one with the hooks at the wide end works fine for me. Just like the BD did. They both open beer, of course, as does any item in the hands of a thirsty climber. drC Quote
Nick Posted August 6, 2005 Posted August 6, 2005 If you're carrying beer you might as well bring along a cold chisel and a hammer. Quote
SemoreJugs Posted August 6, 2005 Posted August 6, 2005 i find keychain biners great for clipping gear that is not pro to my harness (ie nut tool, camera, nalgene) I prefer a nut tool with a flat sirface to strike with a hex for those stubborn nutz that my partner yanked on. Quote
SemoreJugs Posted August 6, 2005 Posted August 6, 2005 okay last post for the night. Have u tried using a thin lost arrow? I find them to work nice as a supplemental, or second nut tool (sometimes one tool aint enough for the ladies). Besides, it has the extra function of protection if you need it. Quote
