Alpinist 10

Just picked up the lastest, and though so far it's a pretty good issue, I'm not impressed with the cover photo of Clint. Don't get me wrong. I loved the Eiger Sanction. And I know he did all his own climbing in it. But to put a grainy picture from the movie on the cover of a magazine that has numerous better choices within the issue was a poor choice.

They got my $12.95 anyway. smileysex5.gif

When exactly was Twight reincarnated as Steve House, anyway? Is is karmic punishment for all the times Twight has slagged gumbies that he is forced to relive his career as an alpinist over and over in other people's bodies?

The Squamish article made the whole issue worth it.

Wazzup w/the softcore porn? smileysex5.gif

An interesting piece, but why in Alpinist? What if it had been written or illustrated by a guy? Would that make it less acceptable?

I thought we were supposed to get inspired (aka turned on) by alpine climbing tales... rolleyes.gif

Bruce Miller is a bad mother fucker, probably one of the most talented all-rount climbers I have ever known. He lost a partner in the mountains not to long ago and didn't want it to happen again. From the account that I heard, Steve House was a little worse off than he described in the article.

They might want to reconsider their format considerng their content. The big, glossy, high quality print job is nice but they don't seem to be maximizing it's potential for great images.

The cover shot is a perfect example, but I can't really think of any imagery in Issue 10 that really needed the format. When they do use a great two page image, like that of the Totem Pole peaking out, they tend to cover it in too much text.

Just a random thought.

Considering how deep they are reportedly in the hole, keeping subscribers happy isn't gonna make much difference.

In the world of magazine publishing, there aren't very many examples of magazines that are able to support themselves (not to mention make a profit) primarily or entirely through subscription revenue. The unsavory reality is that it's advertising that pays the bills. As a rule of thumb, the more ads you see in a magazine, the better it's doing financially. I don't know anything about Alpinist's books, but judging from the extraordinarily high production values and the paucity of ads, I bet they're hemmoraging cash.

I hope I'm proven wrong and they make it, 'cause it's the only interesting climbing mag out there.

I agree that the grainy shot from the Eiger Sanction was a waste of cover space, though.

You mean the pictures of people toking up at the crag? That Alpinist magazine? Or the interesting original female nude artwork, that Alpinist magazine? Or the great pictures of early legends cragging at Squeemish? That Alpinist magazine?

This issue was a dissappointment. Not a whole lot of alpine in there. To be honest, I've gotten alot more stoke out of the recent trip reports on cc.com than I got from Alpinist X.

Alpinist bills itself as "The Climbing Life," and there's more to climbing as a lifestyle than just the cc.com trip reports.

I mean Michael Kennedy's "Ama Dablam". That Alpinist magazine. Steve House's "The Way." That Alpinist magazine. The editor's "Climbing Notes." That Alpinist magazine.

And yeah, Peter Croft's "Squamish." That Alpinist magazine. We all started from someplace, and this is the first time I've heard of where Peter came from.

Are there weird pieces along the way? Sure there are. This issue's "The Climbing Life" section had awesome photos (I really liked the one of Hersey), but the short pieces made me yawn.

You're bitching about 22 pages out of 96, and I was psyched by 47 pages. The Ama Dablam story alone was 20 pages.

Keep it in perspective - this was a good issue...

The article on pot was just about as dumb as it gets. Steve House is a great climber (if not the best) but has some serious personal issues. And why do I need to read about the love / sex lives of dirtbag climbers when that sort of shit is just the daily lives of most climbers I know. Layton's piece was way better than that drivel.

The old school Squamish article was top notch though. What a great little known segment of climbing history.

They better not disappear after I subscribed for 3 years to support them (despite the fact that the USPS trashes many of my issues and that I should buy at retail). My favorite sailing magazine did that to me already years ago...

The cover pic is disappointing, especially after the one on Alpinist 9, which I loved. And it does look like Steve House is blaming Bruce, yes...

A climbing mag I like: Gripped. Too bad they look a little disorganized: I paid for 2 years in December 2004 and am still waiting for an issue boxing_smiley.gif

Well I am glad to hear I am not the only one missing my issue.

I'm still waiting for mine as well. confused.gif I recently moved, but I know they have my new address because they sent me a renewal notice even though I've still got 2 issues left on my current subscription.
