Winter Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Yo Mike, check out the schedule of local pick-up games. http://www.portlandultimate.org/pickup.html I used to play a few years back but got out of it. Stay away from the leagues, because you deal with a bunch of hyper competitive jack asses, but the pick-up games are fun. And you might meet a hottie. Quote
b-rock Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 thanks. now I gotta figure out how to play anyone got any trail running info? Friends of Forest Park puts out a book of maps with convenient loop options, from 3-12 miles. I think Powells has them. Quote
John Frieh Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Wildwood trail is 30 miles one way of hills and mud. Quote
pat_o Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Michael..... I believe your situation truely calls for a dog! Constant companion, confidant and a hell of a trail runner. Depending on breed of course. All of your complex issues and wanting can be realized in a four legged friend. Just imagine having very attentive ears following your every jesticulation and whine as you reherse one of your diatribes before presenting it here! layton Posted December 13, 2004 Author Posted December 13, 2004 Thanks for the trail running info, i don't want a dog and I know where the trails are. I just get bored running them by myself and it would be fun to go with some other folks. Yeah, those pick-up games seem like the ticket. I need to practice my toss before I show. Anyone wanna come and be a newbie with me? I'm just looking to change it up and try some new things, don't need the pschoanalysis. Quote
b-rock Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Not sure when you run but I'd be up for hitting some trails after 4pm during the week. Quote
layton Posted December 13, 2004 Author Posted December 13, 2004 I have finals this week. If you wanna go after new years (i'll be outta town) then i'd be down. Quote
b-rock Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Ya, I'm down. It's pretty tough for me to get out there after work around now anyways, much easier in a couple of months... Quote
Ricardo_Montalban Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 forest park rocks! the wildwood trail will soon be mud pit, but for similar experience try the leif ericson road starting at the germantown road parking area. oak bottoms is another area (with potential). the paved springwater corridor trail runs from the sellwood bridge to the ross island bridge and there are a couple of dirt trails on either side (no bikes on dirt trails) (mileage ??; < 2.5 miles). the rest of this month is crazy for me, but after the new year shoot me a pm if you want to hit one of these trails or others. http://www.xdogevents.com/ these folks put on some fun runs in and around (a couple hours drive) the portland area. when i finished the last race i did with them (a scramble) the keg was easier to find than the water station. i also didn't experience any of the expected 'athletic arrogance'. http://www.redlizardrunning.com/ folks from this club usually win the x-dog events don't have any experience with the following: http://www.users.qwest.net/~ultrawillow/Trailseries.htm ultramarathon trail series http://www.orrc.net/ oregon road runners club Quote
chumpman Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 i can vouch for the game at 22nd and powell (sundays @2pm). its a fun atmosphere and you will be welcome as a beginner. there is often a smaller game going on for the less fit/ambitious. Quote
rbw1966 Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 I used to play ultimate at PSU. Generally a pretty cool crowd there. The Powell crowd is very cool too. I wouldn't call the trail along Oaks Bottom a 'trail'--its paved asphalt so you might as well run the road. The dirt 'trails' are so short that they are hardly worth the effort of getting there. It gets enough bike traffic (thats my commute) to make things spicey if you aren't paying attention. Quote
jaee Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 I know a few Ultimate players that climb and ski. PM me if interested in email addresses. Also, for running, have you considered hash runs? I know a few of these folks, too. Combines all the fun of running thru the woods in the dark with overconsumption of adult beverages. Oregon Hash House Quote
Ricardo_Montalban Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 i liked the oak bottom trails b/c they were 5 blocks from my front door. they are short, but can be combined to get in a decent run. if i were to drive to run, this would not be my destination. from lower sellwood park, run around the pond. cross the paved trail to the w. side and keep running the trails north. these will almost take you to the ross island gravel co. (watch out for tree limbs). double back. that'll give you about 5 miles of trail running. i usually include the trails to the upper park to get my blood pumping. the scenery is nice too. Quote
Hal_Burton Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 I've had some good times with these guys. Portland Hump Hash Amazing how motivating R.W.I. is. They'll often find some great trails that you never knew existed. Quote
MtnHigh Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 I've run a number of hashes with the Humphashers (formerly the Bridge Town Hashers). You're basically running for the beer stashed in the woods or the awesome food/beer spread at the end. Usually the runs are mello, an hour or so to complete the hash, but once it took us three hours to find the house party. Huffy, Skinny and Muddy make it a lot fun. Plus there's always single wimmin.
