MATT_B Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 It is kind of like comparing James Bond and McGiver. One has class the other is just kind of silly. Quote
gearbot Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 Don't forget "The Mountain" (1956) with Spencer Tracy  Quote
JoshK Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 THough not a climbing movie, I always loved "Aspen Extreme" Â Anybody who has every been to aspen knows what I mean when I say there is *nothing* extreme about that place! Well...maybe extremely stuck up! Quote
JoshK Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 come to think of it, I believe our own very ExtremoMtDude may have had a part in aspen extreme. Quote
jefffski Posted June 28, 2003 Posted June 28, 2003 cerro torre about 2 climbers racing up cerro torre. starred al waxman. good climbing scenes. they were each soloing on different sides of the mountain but one scene shows one of the climbers on a steep snow wall, being belayed from above. he eventually falls and dies hanging in his harness. Â good film. http://us.imdb.com/Title?0102855 Quote

chirp Posted June 28, 2003 Posted June 28, 2003 Eiger Sanction  Cliffhanger  El Capitan (by Glen Denny)  On the Rocks Quote
pindude Posted June 28, 2003 Posted June 28, 2003 chirp said:Â El Capitan (by Glen Denny) Â Â El Capitan...yes, filmed by Glen Denny in 1969 or prior, but credit must also be given to Fred Padula who did the editing and released the final version in 1978. Â at each of Cliffhanger, K2, Vertical Limit, pissing off others around us who weren't laughing at the same lines. I have to admit I paid $$ to watch all 3 of those in the theatre. At least the scenery wasn't too bad. Â Stallone, prior to Cliffhanger's release, said he was going to make a climbing movie "true to climbers." Â For the movie K2, I can't forget when two groups of climbers were hanging out on their portaledges on the dry, warm North Face of Fairview Dome with their haul bags and all their wall gear...suddenly, they say they've entered the "snow zone": the haul bags, ledges, and massive wall gear are gone, and they're chugging up a snow slope (on Waddington?) sporting plastic boots, axes and other snow/ice gear, full Gore-tex outifits, and big alpine packs! Â FWIW, I've seriously been asked if I've ever used nitroglycerin in the mountains, and many times, if I have a "bolt gun." Quote
Dan_Harris Posted June 28, 2003 Posted June 28, 2003 Watched Eiger Sanction on AMC Thursday. Very good movie. Clint Eastwood movies are great. Stallone movies suck. #1 Eastwood flick is definitely Josey Wale. High Plains Drifter, also great, was shot at Mono Lake on the east side of the Sierras, one of favorite places to go. Quote
ChrisT Posted June 28, 2003 Posted June 28, 2003 *love* Mono Lake but haven't been there in years. Hot in the valley Dan? Quote

AlpineK Posted June 29, 2003 Posted June 29, 2003 Eiger sanction rules in terms of climbing movies  Cliffhanger isn't bad but there's a lot more cheese in it. John Lithgow is a good actor!  As far as westerns go Outlaw Josey Wales is good, but nothing can hold it's own against The Good The Bad And The Ugly. Quote
toptimmy Posted June 29, 2003 Posted June 29, 2003 the best part of cliffhanger is Stallone's climbing double. Mr. Ron Kauk. Quote
