What were you smoking when you saw the boulder climbing?

Nice change!

umm ... isn't part of that because we're not paying the tax on them by buying from overseas? You mean the non-existent (<4% duties on climbing gear?) Keep on believing what they tell you........

Have you ever found a shoe with a decent stock footbed?

Compared to clothes (or ski gear), 40% ain't much of a markup (and I imagine beacons move like molasses). If your looking for a cheap beacon - try these guys (who I know nothing about...)http://www.avalanchebeacon.com (After all, it's only your partners life). Is it poor etiquette to ask to swap beacons with a partner before a tour?
-
There isn't that much QC work that goes into beacons (at least compared to telco or milspec equip) - the cost is more manufacture margin - which is directly volume related. I'm actually surprised that the retailer margin is so low - usually its 40-50%?

Erik, Forest Service is Dept of Agriculture, while NPS is Dept of Interior. I have worked for both in the past, too. Unless you've been on that side of the fence, shut up. Alex- Dept of Interior, and the USDA are neighbors in DC (a whopping mile apart, across the mall) (D of I 1849 C Street, USDA 14th& Independance). Far less seperates their policies. -
Given that the couple in the minvan repeatedly asked "whats the closest we can drive to Mt. Hood?" It wouldn't surprise me at all.
-
I personally like the question I was asked this Sunday at the Timberline parking lot, from an elderly couple in a minivan, in all earnestness "Where's Mt. Hood?"

I've had the same experience with Cytomax- indeed I now drink a Liter after most heavy exercise. (on a side note - I've noticed excessive alcohol dramatically increases the perceived soreness after exertion)

That's the post-arrest climbing suit!

I've salivated heavily over most of the ice climbs listed in the Olson book - and the gorge falls. Too bad Multnomah's off limits Lots of potential out there in Gorgeland with an artic winter.

Well Done! Anyone up for the first winter ascent?

When I was up on Adams the 6th there was a guy from U of Idaho there asking people to fill out a use survey - lots of questions about wildness etc. Mostly I just filled in all the bubbles saying no permits. -
Source I'm pretty sure it was in "Death in the afternoon" somewhere's towards the beginning. For a good story has anyone read "Cross-Country Snow"?

The PLB 406 at Weight: 17.6 ounces Dimensions: 1.9 x 6.5 x 3.8 inches http://www.mgear.com/pages/product/product.asp?level1_id=0&level2_id=0&level3_id=0&item=103873&level2_title= Would be bigger - and a good bit heavier. Still for solo wilderness trip it'd probably be a good idea.
