Kevbone did your mom drink a lot of booze when she was pregnant with you? You're displaying symptoms that make me think the answer is yes.
  5. Yep, lifts help you get lots of downhill time, and some ski lessons help too. BC skiing is better with good technique, and ski areas can help you there. The ski areas do lack the funky conditions you will encounter away from the lifts. Maybe to start spend 80 percent of your time skiing areas and the remaining 20 percent in the BC. As you progress try to reduce time at the area. I like the photos!
  6. Trip: Snoqualmie Pass - Chair Peak, Mt. Catherine, Mt Snoqualmie Date: 12/30/2010 Trip Report: Friends and I spent three days skiing around Snoqualmie Pass. Snow conditions ranging from killer to funky. I'd say killer beat out funky each day, and the route lineup hit some of my favorites. On December 30th we skied the North Face of Chair Peak from the bottom of the climbing route to Snow Lake. The next day our route of choice was the NW aspect of Mt. Catherine. Finally to celebrate the start of 2011 we skied the Slot Couloir on Mt. Snoqualmie. North Face of Chair Peak, December 30 2010 The 30th was the first sunny day after snow storms dumped their goods. We left the upper Alpental parking lot just after 8 AM and followed the groomed cat track then other ski tracks up to the east bowl under Chair Peak. Our group included David Parker, Tansaafl, and Jeff Hansel. Above Source Lake Looking back at the lake In the east bowl we met up with the fellows who broke trail and thanked them then started setting our own tracks. Shadows of skiers Here's a sketch of our tracks to the north face. The last traverse was exciting. We tried to space ourselves out from what looked like safe spots to the next location appearing to be a good stopping spot. Traverse to NE Ridge of Chair Looking at Snoqualmie Mountain from the traverse Tanstaafl waiting to cross At the base of the NE Ridge we skied out on the north face to a point under the North Face climbing route and checked out our path ahead. Looking back at Mt. Snoqualmie From here things were downward bound. I was the first sucker to ski a stretch, but we traded off the position of front man. Here is a video I took of the rest of the ski. Keep in mind I'm a rookie video editor [video:vimeo] Edit: the YouTube version of the video [video:youtube] We skied over an icy layer about 8-inches under the surface. Conditions looked reasonable, but I did cut a small slab on a role in the ski line. On the way out I had a great time looking at snow covered trees. Looking back at our tracks on Snow Lake Unfortunately Dave and Jeff couldn't ski the next day, but skiing the face was a blast! Mt. Catherine NW Trees, December 31 2010 Tanstaafl and I decided to ski something we thought was slightly easier on the 31st. One other factor we observed on the drive to the pass was wind pumping plumes of snow off the tops of peaks on the drive to the pass. Neither of us had skied Catherine in a few years, and tree skiing seemed like the best way to stay out of the wind. We spent between 30 seconds and a minute on the summit ridge then headed back to the wind free zone and skiing. Mt Catherine Summit ridge trees We ran into an ice crust on top of new snow. The crust was quite a bit thicker than anything we ran into while skiing Chair Peak. That didn't stop us from finding good lines to ski. We were both happy with the day, and happy to go someplace warm and rest up for day number three. Mt. Snoqualmie Slot Couloir, January 1 2011 Jeff Hansel rejoined Tanstaafl for day three of skiing. We drove up to the Alpental parking lot and ran into Lisa who has posted on CC. Lisa told us a mutual friend went to ski the Slot Couloir on the 30th while we were skiing Chair Peak. Apparently our friend bailed when he ran into a group with ropes in the couloir. Apparently the group felt the conditions were bad and or too icy for a safe descent. I figured at the worst we'd ski the Phantom Slide again, and that wasn't a horrible consolation prize In any case we found a nice uptrack to the entrance to the couloir. Unlike the day before wind was gone. You could get radiant heat and not seek out shelter! At the top of the Slot Jeff and I scoped it out. We saw an icy layer, but it didn't seem excessively thick. From experience on the previous days I figured it was a thin layer you could punch through to powder below. Tanstaafl didn't have much experience with steep couloir skiing, so we talked things out. In the end Jeff took the lead on descent skiing from safe spot to safe spot. Tanstaafl followed next wearing a climbing harness in case the sketch factor elevated beyond her comfort level. I followed last with a short rope in my pack prepared to set an anchor and belay if necessary. As things turned out skiing went just fine. Variable conditions for sure. We found a thin icy crust on powder in places and wind packed snow in other spots. Unfortunately we didn't find any killer pow spots, but it was tons of fun. Tanstaafl on her first Slot Couloir descent Jeff rippin it up Looking up the couloir Lower down the Slot Looking up from the bottom of the run After the run there is the climb out We made it most of the way to the notch on skis, but there was some boot packing involved Following the climb out skiing down the Phantom in the sun was nice. I suppose I could bitch about all the other skiers that chopped it up, but I think I'll let it slide this time All and all this group of trips was a great way to celebrate the end of the decade! Gear Notes: Other than standard bc ski gear we took some gear for some small scale belaying and protection, but we never used it.
  7. In terms of theft it isn't a huge monetary loss, but theft is theft. A convenience store owner has the right to call the cops if you walk in and rip off a packet of gum. Then again he may just post a video of his staff questioning you outside his store then post it online for other shopkeepers to see. Everything else in this thread is part of the long history on CC of, "debate," when it comes to bolting.
  8. All you need to do is ask what kind of gun Dirty Harry has. [video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnMLGkj91Og
  9. Is grass the only plant life worth considering near Cascade Pass? I see a number of trees in this photo. [img:center]http://i27.tinypic.com/ddm839.jpg[/img] The roots grow in the, "dirt," or soil around the trunks, or where you're camping on top of. Here's an article for you to read http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/garden/02926.html While these aren't urban trees, Cascade Pass is a high use area in the mountains.
  10. If drive time is the most important thing then reducing the crowd at the ski area helps. Don't go between Christmas and New Years. When you do go pick midweek days to ski. Past that go to Canada. I've driven by but never skied at Anthony Lakes. It looked like it had some good terrain for in area skiing.

Here's an organization for Kevbone http://theflatearthsociety.org/cms/ Or this one [video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mouUUWpEec0 Maybe Billcoe can join too. This is the real thing
  13. Snoqualmie Pass transitions from snow to rain frequently. A pineapple express is an event covering the region. There was about 8-inches of new snow high on Mt. Snoqualmie yesterday.
  14. See what-cha-wanna-do in this case is identify board members and figure out what kind of activities they like outside of work. Maybe it's a posh tennis club, or a charity organization. Join the club/organization then start kissing ass. Keep in mind it takes money to make money. Make sure you've got plenty to invest. Here's an educational video [video:youtube]

One of the first things the National Ski Patrol talks about for Outdoor Emergency Care is Body Substance Isolation. Ski up to an injured skier and put gloves on. It's the number one way to keep the victim from infecting you, or you from infecting them. Goggles are number two followed by a breathing mask. If you're constantly in contact with lots of people gloves might not be a bad idea. Santa wears rubber gloves . 16. I've read a number of articles saying companies offering similar products often set up shop close to each other. They are competing, but a potential customer only need to go to one district or area of town. All companies benefit from the arrangement. Hugh does bring up a good point. REI was set up as a cooperative back when climbers in the NW wanted things like ice axes but couldn't purchase them and or filling out all the forms to import one ice ax from Europe was a major pain. In modern times running for a board position at REI is essentially impossible for Joe/Jane member. The company is a cooperative in name only. I've talked to a few people who work at climbing, or outdoor stores. No matter how much technical gear they stock the big money maker is clothing. The folks who run REI chose to expand and place stores all over the place. Each store needs to make money, so the big money making items like clothing get the big dog position in the store. Climbing gear doesn't bring in much money, so it takes a lower position. REI needs to retain some climbing equipment to keep up their image, but they're following the same path Eddie Bauer and The North Face did. You can find climbing gear that may be just what you want, but I wouldn't go there if you want an unusual item. Also, chances are low you'll find somebody working there who can answer questions about the performance of an item and compare it to similar products. There is the REI dividend, but other companies often offer discounts or price their products to match the dividend.

  20. Yep, Aneroid Lake has a nice hut with cool terrain for skiing around it. I did a couple winter ski trips there.
  21. Surveying last 150 posts J_B has 3 posts outside Spray, or a 98% Spray average Fairweather has 4 posts outside Spray, or a 97.33% Spray average I need to get my numbers up. I'm only at 62% Then again maybe not.
  22. Yeah it looks like a good way to get past snow covered roads that get in the way of the rad stuff. The site doesn't say what kind of mpg the thing gets. You might have to trailer a bunch of fuel. For $2500 I'd rather spend a bit more and get the dirtbike attachment
  23. The Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) program is a good one. It's essentially the same as EMT training except you don't have an ambulance full of equipment. If you combined that with Mountain Travel and Rescue (MTR) you would have a lot of qualifications that guiding services would like. Those programs are offered by Ski Patrol. If you're a skier think about it. The WFR program might be the thing to do if skiing isn't your thing and or you don't want to sign up with a volunteer/pro ski patrol.
  24. The last time I watched TV on a regular basis was when the cable company forgot to disconnect the line at a rental house. Eventually they caught on and pulled the plug. I did get a, "special offer," to reconnect, but I figured BS on the Internet was a lot more entertaining. The cable bill didn't inspire me either. Of course if the Dukes of Hazard was still producing shows I might change my opinion.
