PUBLIC MEETING WEDS 2/2/11: RAINIER CLIMBING FEES
AlpineK replied to MarmotMountain's topic in Climber's Board
Yes people were climbing the mountain long before any structure on the mountain. I think the problem is one of numbers. Long ago climbing the mountain was rare. With low numbers of campsite users then there was no need for any kind of structure. Today lots of folks want to climb the mountain. Restricting climbing permits is one way to preserve the place. Building structures in key locations for climbers is another way to minimize impact. Whether we like it or not local population has grown and information on the mountain is available everywhere. Yesterdays solutions to problems may not apply today. -
PUBLIC MEETING WEDS 2/2/11: RAINIER CLIMBING FEES

A larger Camp Muir could allow the park to make Muir the only climbing high camp via that side of the mountain (No Nisqually Flats). I don't know all the issues involved with that decision, but a bigger hut may reduce costs associated with climbers camping on that side of the mountain. That side of the mountain does receive the most climber use. Possibly an upfront expense and a long term saving. I'd want to see how they decided on expanding/rebuilding it. Maybe bigger bathroom facilities is all they need. -
Devil's Tower has rad climbing. It is subject to some climbing closures. I don't know the dates offhand, but it is something to think about when planning climbing trip stops. Edit: I looked at the NPS information. As long as your trip is after June climbing isn't an issue.

If you buy a lift ticket you've given the man the right to mess with you.

A friend who does volunteer patrolling at Alpental tells me they discussed travel through the ski area in a pre-season group meeting. According to my friend the policy is they do not limit or restrict travel through the area. I believe the primary target for this policy is folks taking the winter route to Source Lake. I don't think they have anywhere near the staff necessary to bust all the folks who travel to the lake via the winter route. Last week I think I saw 500 folks traveling out of area near the lake. Things might change next year of course.

Ummm summer pictures are fine. This should not be posted as a trip report. On 1-16-2011 nobody was climbing Iconoclast wearing tank tops.

I didn't see Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) on your list. In any case you have to have it as a ski patroller. The very first thing you talk about in class is wearing gloves (latex or non latex) when touching somebody with an injury. You don't want what they might have, and they don't want what you might have. That's the only ordering I'd do to Cobra's list. Ski patrollers are first responders, and they perform the minimum care to get the injured person to a first aid room or ambulance with specialized equipment. If you're out in the mountains and somebody is really messed up rapid transport probably isn't an option.

You have less than 2 years to live, so why vaccinate. Dec 21, 2012 [img:center]http://blogs.neuronring.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/the-mayan-calander.jpg[/img] Sarah Palin wins the presidency and the world ends the next month.

Without a lot of big companies in the city producing high grade steel and guns you'd be defending yourself and hunting with a club. Living in the sticks sucks without big cities to supply your habits.

That video is funny. Make sure you know whether you're going to Peyto or Bow Hut when you start

Just because your mom used to drop you on your head as an infant doesn't make it an acceptable practice for kids these days.

Hey Rednose being rugged resourceful and all, are you a member: Grizzly Bear Fight Club? [img:center]http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/hs175.ash2/41798_2204929659_9763_n.jpg[/img]

I'm sure you could work something out. My dad and his buddies flew to Ghost Lake then walked up the Tiedemann in 1960. Longer approach but cheaper. [img:center]http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/plab/data/500/ag26_012.jpg[/img]

Does annoying Raindawg follow a scale like climbing? Simple = R.1 to R.9 Complicated R.10a, R.10b,..., R.15c

They might want to practice the song a few more times before posting it. That and figure out how to run the karaoke machine.

Ski planes are a good resource for climbers and skiers in SW BC. Cheaper than a helicopter.

clearly they were crosshairs. Even still, do you really think that sarah palin intentionally intended them to mean that these people should be shot? I dislike Sarah, but I don't think the image was a call for violence. I'm pretty sure sane folks did not see the add as a message to get a gun. It sounds like the shooter had some major problems for years before he took the gun to the event. He also shot and killed a number of other people there too. I don't think politicians should use image tactics like that to get their message across, but blaming the add for the shooting is wrong too.

It would be nice to see the Great CC.Com Spray Cabal come to grips with how invectives spewed on a climbing website resolve nothing and fail to change any opinions. You know who you are, both right and left wing, with 90 percent of your postings on CC in Spray. Why not try going climbing or skiing. I hear both of those activities are fun, even when conditions aren't perfect. [img:center]http://lh4.ggpht.com/_rxgbPHdbZ9I/TSp-wU-0DMI/AAAAAAAAA3s/w9e8nNTd1k0/8-Ski-Slope-IMG_3651.gif[/img]

Descending from climbing the Cassin Ridge in the 80s we ran into this guy at the 14,000 ft camp. The fellow was determined to solo the route. We tried to talk him out of it, or at least find another party to tag along with while ascending the NE fork of the Kahiltna Glacier. A month later I got a call from a park ranger asking me to tell him everything I knew about the fellow. Apparently they found foot tracks leading into an area below the upper icefall. The tracks went into a recent avalanche zone but didn't come out. There is a reason why the NE fork also goes by the name Valley of Death.

Gmap4 = Google Maps + topographic maps. Free.

Go mushroom hunting at the base of St Helens. If you find the right mushrooms and eat them prior to climbing the map will make complete sense. -

I've copied a couple Gmap4 maps and took them with me recently. Good stuff
