[TR] Mt. Garibaldi - NW Face Attempt 3/2/2008
AlpineK replied to gertlush's topic in British Columbia/Canada
It's good to hear you made it back with an experience but nothing bad. I sure hope things get better up there in the early spring. -
I've shot guns at targets a handful of times. It is fun, but there are other alternatives to guns. You can have tons of fun with BB guns, and they give you the same, but safer, thrill. All you need is a fence a pile of empty aluminum beer or soda cans and a few BB guns. Back a few months ago a group of friends had an excellent competition standing around a fire and plugging beer cans at a party. One good thing is you can keep setting the empties back up for more blasting. As far as real guns go if you have a hunting license then you should have places to go where you can hunt with a gun, but I see no reason for anyone other than a ranger to pack heat in a National Park. As far as hunting goes guns are fine, but you get a lot bigger points in my book if you hunt with a bow and even bigger points still if you hunt with a long bow. Now there's a real skill with thousands of years of tradition.

That looks like a lot of fun.

I met Jeff once in '92. He'd come into Trango Mountaineering to visit and talk product. The company I worked for was right next door to Trango. At the time he was very active in climbing and interested in all aspects of climbing including stuff I was doing. Overcoming an bad injury or any medical problem is a tough thing to do. Just as tough as a really hard climb.

I went up to Skagit to see the Scurlock show and it was well worth the drive, but it is a ways to drive.
-
Actually if you study much of the history of NW climbing you'd find that a very high percentage of climbers skied in the backcountry. In the modern age some people solely focus on crag climbing, but that does not represent all climbers.

I mostly limit my coffee to the morning. I do like tea in the afternoon and evening. Too much coffee will give one an ulcer.

Pot is a drug just like alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and many other things. Most of the items on the above list are legal, but no different than pot. Should you smoke pot all day every day? Well hell no just like you shouldn't do the same thing with alcohol. Drunk drivers seem to cause a lot of accidents. Personally I'd like to have open options, but these days I'm in a different category. I believe I'll go get another cup of coffee now.

Spearhead traverse prepare for latte liberals!
AlpineK replied to Hugh Conway's topic in the *freshiezone*
The article fails to mention that the Spearhead is training for traversing. I also notice little mention of things like whiteouts near Overlord. -
I'm glad you guys brought that trip up. I instantly thought of that event when the subject of conditions on Yellow Brick Road came up.

I should have qualified my statement. Please define your expectations for, "good skiing." I've skied on Rainier in July.
-
In 2006 we had good skiing late March/early April and then good skiing again in early May. From the sounds of it this year the snow pack is doing pretty good, so I'd expect good skiing to stick around till late spring.
-
Powder skiing rules, but so does spring skiing.
-
The skiing will be great for quite a bit longer this year. It's nice to hear you're out skiing with your boy at a young age. My dad talked me into a lot of crazy skiing when I was a youngster.

They just need to get rid of the Denny's sign on the front and do some other restoration and it'll be a lot nicer. Too bad they aren't going to demo all the neighboring condos and bring in a bunch of replacement crusty Norwegians while they're at it. Hell, get rid of all those fancy pants new places on Ballard Ave. and bring back the old Ballard Hardware.

Nice.

Should'nt the Mountain Loop Highway have its own..
AlpineK replied to Josh Lewis's topic in North Cascades
Just take a look at the BC forum. With logic like dividing up the Mountain Loop separate from the rest of the North Cascades the BC forum should be separated into well over 100 forums. -
[TR] This Be the Place - FAWK 2/16/2008
AlpineK replied to jordop's topic in British Columbia/Canada
That's some crazy stuff that happened Jordop and Paul. It makes my little avy encounter around Crystal look wimpy. I'm glad you guys are ok. I really want to do some bc skiing up yonder, but I guess I won't feel bad about waiting till spring. -

What about plants? They have no heart, brain and lungsā¦..yet I believe them to be alive. Tree specifically, but plants in general are alive, but it's a different form of life than human or animal life. Do something simple like cut yourself. You will respond differently to the injury than a plant would respond to a similar injury. Likewise trees will respond to events they experience, but they do it in a different way than a human or animal would.

I got this off a listserv yesterday, and I thought I'd share.

The project pictured in the middle of the highway won't stay.
