  1. On Monday Novermber 5, President Bush signed the InteriorAppropriations Bill which included provisions to extend and expand therecreation fee demonstration program. The highly controversial feedemonstration program is now authorized until September 2004 and thepervious limitation of 100 sites per agency has been removed. Inaddition, the recreation budget and Capital Improvement portions ofthe US Forest Service have been increased by a total of $40,000,000. Ihave no doubt that this money will be spent on highly visible projectsand that the USFS will do its best to mislead the public into thinkingthat these improvements were made possible by fee-demo dollars. Amongst the bad news, there is some good news!! In removing the cap on the number of recreation sites where fees canbe collected, the USFS is now free to introduce this program intoparts of the country that had yet seen these user fees. AND becausewhen fees are introduced, angry users write letters to theircongressional delegation. We can thus be assured that many morecongressmen will be hearing from their constituency on the fee issue. There is, unfortunately, more bad news. The agencies sense victory and are aggressively preparing forPresident Bush's anticipated new and improved fee program scheduled tobe introduced in the Spring of 2002. The bad news is that we almostcertainly do not have until September 2004 in which to kill thefee-demo program because a new program will be substituted forfee-demo within the next 12 months. In fact, the bad news is thatpermanent fee legislation is on a fast track and that we must becomesignificantly more active in our effort to end this program andprevent Bush's replacement program from going anywhere. The sum of the bad news is simply this --- AS THINGS STAND,opposition to fee demo will probably not reach critical proportionsuntil after recreation users fees are permanently authorized. The sum of the good news is this --- the AMERICAN PUBLICWILL NEVER ACCEPT permanent recreation user fees and willeventually overturn any such program and will restore free accessto public lands in the years to come. The amount of pain and suffering that must be experienced between nowand then will depend upon how aggressively the proponents of thesefees push their agenda and upon how actively and effectively theopponents of user fees work to thwart them. It's up to us. It's up to you. I appreciate your help. Scott ---begin quoted--- http://www.fs.fed.us/news/2001/11/01nov06-FS2002Budget.htmNews ReleaseUSDA Forest ServiceWashington, D.C.Contact: Heidi Valetkevitch, (202) 205-1134FOREST SERVICE RECEIVES $4.1 BILLION BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002 WASHINGTON, Nov. 6, 2001--President Bush yesterday signed the Department ofInterior and Related Agencies Appropriation Act for fiscal 2002, whichincludes the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service's budget of $4.1billion. The Forest Service received increases for research and developmentas well as recreation, heritage and wilderness programs. "Restoring forest and rangeland health, making lands accessible to therecreating public and protecting lives and communities from wildfire are ourtop priorities," said Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth. "Forest Serviceemployees will spend these dollars wisely and efficiently in maintaining andrestoring the health, diversity and productivity of America's nationalforests and grasslands." The Department of Interior and Related Agencies Appropriations Act passedCongress by votes of 380-28 in the U.S. House and 95-3 in the U.S. SenateOct. 17. While the Forest Service is now an agency under USDA, it was onceunder DOI. When the agency was moved from DOI to USDA in 1905, its fundingmechanism remained attached to DOI. The largest increase of almost $25 million went to the Forest Service'scapital improvement and maintenance program to decrease its maintenancebacklog. Monies will be used to improve the agency's infrastructure, including the construction and restoration of buildings and the maintenanceof roads. The measure also increases funding for Forest Service recreation, heritageand wilderness programs by more than $15 million; forest and range researchby more than $12 million; forest products by $11 million; and vegetation andwater management by almost $9 million. The bill fully funds the President's request for implementation of theNational Fire Plan while adding more than $50 million for rehabilitation andrestoration of burned lands, plus additional $200 million to pay forunanticipated fire suppression costs. ### ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Scott SilverWild Wilderness248 NW Wilmington Ave.Bend, OR 97701 phone: 541-385-5261e-mail: ssilver@wildwilderness.orgInternet: http://www.wildwilderness.org ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  2. Sounds wierd, are you sure that it's not your browser. Anyone having the same problem? Nerdy tech guys?! What?
  3. I hate doing pullups (and situps) but my favorite by far are towel pullups. Take your pullup bar or whatever and put two towels over the bar about a foot apart. Then take athletic tape and wrap the two ends of each towel together a few inches above the end, this is where you typically grip the towel. Now try and do pullups! I found these really work your muscles differently than normal pullups and helps with your grip strength. You can make the grip area different diameters and put the towels further or closer to mix it up.

The new system is actually a lot different, look at your sent messages and you'll see it actually starts a whole thread with the correspondance for that person and subject.

  16. GS skis are definately stiff and made for wide turns, and are typically a lot longer. I've got some K2 GS races at 207 with racing bases and a Derby Flex and they are they are absolutely fucking scary to ride on, way too fast and you really have to work to turn the things, aren't any fun in the powder. They're a blast on anything groomed bu basically it's a "hasn't snowed in weeks watch me carve turns on ice better than you" ski. I would not recommend a ski like this to anyone except a few of my more insane friends. I was skeptical about fat shaped skis when they came out but after owning my first pair I'm a believer, you truly ski better with them, especially in powder. Forget the GS/Slalom crap, go find a pair of cruising skis and have a blast. I have some Fischer Alltrax Expeditions with some risers on it and it an awesome ski. If they hadn't been killed by a rock I would have throw some of the new Fritches' on them for backcountry skis. People put risers on tele skis?

The Who's Online is coming back but in a slightly (and I think better) form probably by this weekend. I can hack the board to show the private messages at the bottom, I agree that is a pretty cool feature, should be done by tomorrow.
  18. Does anyone know why they close it?

  21. This is from Andy Fitz, will be put up with a link from front page soon.----------------------------------------------ACCESS FUND TRAIL PROJECT:THE BEND (TIETON RIVER AREA)November 10, 20019:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. This one-day project will complete work remaining from a trail project in April, 2000. We’ll be putting the finishing touches on trails built last year (which replaced multiple eroding climbers’ paths); creating one section of new trail; building rock walls to shore up some belay areas; and reseeding old trail areas. We need at least 15 VOLUNTEERS to finish up the work. No tools or experience are needed! Just have work gloves, wear sturdy shoes, and bring your own food and water. There is undeveloped camping nearby. The Bend is a columnar andesite cliff located 25 miles west of Yakima on U.S. Highway 12 (approx. 3 hours from Seattle; 2 ½ hours from Tacoma). The cliff features over 70 routes (mostly cracks, with a few sport routes) from 5.7 to 5.12. 70% of the climbs are in the 5.10 range. The crag is located on land managed for wildlife habitat by the Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife. By addressing climber impacts, this project helps preserve access to the area. For details and to volunteer, contact Andy Fitz, Access Fund coordinator: Phone: (253) 761-7866 E-mail: fitlan@home.com Please volunteer in advance so we know how many to count on. GIVE A DAY TO HELP PRESERVE A CLIMBING AREA!
  22. So I'd like to get a feel for how people like the new message board, anything that is different that you don't like. I thought I'd also explain why we upgraded the thing. So why the upgrade? Basically better features for you, better admin utilities for us which makes our lives easier, and it's faster which keeps the hosting company off our backs (some companies don't even all them). Additionally the people who make this message board are phasing out their support the old and new hacks (scripts to add features) are only being made for the new one. So it was really a logical choice for us. I know the format has changed a little bit, but it's pretty much the same thing. Some of the features like the active topics and who's online will be back, we're just having to work them into the new system which will take a few days, hopefully then things will be back to normal. We may have done the upgrade a little prematurely and I apologize for that. It doesn't sound like people like the ratings and which is fine, I just wanted to see how well it worked. In the future we may implement some sort of it where only people with good ratings have them shown, but I'll basically leave that up to the users if they want that kind of feature. If you have private messages from the old system send me a private message and I'll be happy to email the file to you. It's unfortunate that they aren't compatible, but now that it's integrated we should never have a problem like this in the future. A better active topics script should be ready tomorrow, which will fix the thing on the front page and will be like before, and will show post from the previous day. The one that came with the board sucks and isn't configurable. Can't really think of much more. Thanks for everyones input, you comments are really important. Jon
  23. So I've turned the rating off for now, and if I do reinstitute it we will start from scratch. So do people want the feature or not, please say why and pros and cons not just yes or no.
  24. quote: Originally posted by Pencil Pusher: I found some of my PM's accessible, others were inaccessible. Very funny. I think these graemlins are a pain in the ass. The rating thing is bogus too. I admire your efforts into this website, but my opinion is I prefer the old. Very funny huh? You must be one of those people who just complain (aka bitch) but fail to offer a solution. I've turned the rating feature off for the time being, it's becoming a distraction and I failed to provide any reason for using it and what criteria should be used. I'd be interested to hear in the other thread if people are interested in having this feature and what the pros and cons may be. As for the old PM's, there is a problem with accessing them and I haven't had time to figure out why. If you want the actual file I'd be more than happy to send it to you just send me a private message, though it is a little garbled with code but readable. I did offer this warning though http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=24&t=000002&p= Party on! [ 10-26-2001: Message edited by: jon ]
