Bill, you don't find it curious that is its synonymous with them closing a long established climbing area right next door for the same bird at exactly the same time?

The Feds are issuing the first ever Golden Eagles Kill Permits to a Central Oregon Wind Farm that will allow them to kill up to 3 Eagles over the next 5 years. At the same time they are closing nearby Trout Creek to climbing to "protect" the Golden Eagles, even though climbers have never bothered the eagles. Hypocrisy at its finest or just the cost of doing business? http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/01/04/9952873-feds-propose-allowing-wind-farm-developer-to-kill-golden-eagles

Huts minimize the ecological impact of hikers and climbers camping. No question about that. So if they don't like the huts, its really the people that use them they are offended by. -
Don't you guys know a troll when you see one?

I'm glad I had to work. But that sausage sounded great the second time round! Not. -
I don't know what MP or SP is, and I am not a software developer. I even have trouble logging on to this website and downloading my photos. But if i can help I will because thats the kind of guy I am.

In my experience, the effective length of the dry treatment depends on how clean you keep the rope, and then how you treat it when top roping, rapping, lowering, as its the dirt and grit that will really tear it up going thru the device. Alpine climbing not so hard on the rope especially if you sling everything well and use revolver biners at critical places.

[TR] Hood - North Face - Left Gull 12/19/2011
stevetimetravlr replied to YocumRidge's topic in Oregon Cascades
Thanks Nastia, cool! I am thinking more of climbing it soon. Looks like the weather window just slipped away for the time being. 6 inches of new up there right now in the past few hours, and supposed to storm all week. I never thought Ivan so much epiced as embraced epicing. If the guy can maintain his cool stuck in a cave underground in a tight little rock tube, my thought is he can keep his cool anywhere. -
He parked on a pullout within the State Park and within eyesight of the Ranger Station and a Ranger, who told him he needed a pass to park there. He ignored said Ranger, was ticketed, and his grounds for dismissal of the ticket are what......she couldn't answer all his questions to his satisfaction?

Nastia, is there any chance you could trce out the line of your ascent on the photo that Dougd posted, and the other alternate line or approach? It shows the whole face really well. Very curious! -
Actually not working for the man, but for you, if you're a climber. We as climbers along with the Beacon Rock Climbing Association, are trying to be a positive presence, and being dicks to the Rangers won't get us very far now will it? The Rangers didn't write the rules or regs, they are just there to enforce them, and as climbers we will be much further ahead with the Park administration as a positive presence. If you have a problem with the Discovery Pass, the person to take it up with would be the people in Olympia who came up with the idea and implemented it, not the every day folks who work the park and are doing their job.

Advice for how to spend the week in February???
stevetimetravlr replied to Andy Zig's topic in Newbies
Bah humbug..spring skiing is usually not near as avy prone as winter loading, especially regarding the terrain the OP asked about. Get out and get on it I say. Snow is coming.......tomorrow!!!! and all next week, snow in the hills. Be the ball Danny, errr Andy. -
He blatantly ignored a Ranger who stopped him and told him he needed a pass, and came back to find a ticket, and he is going to fight it? Thats a good one. You might want to think that one thru. I wouldn't be surprised if the judge actually tacks on an extra fine for disregard and failure to obey a Law enforcement officer, and based on the above statement, sounds like they can nail you for vandalism as well.

Advice for how to spend the week in February???
stevetimetravlr replied to Andy Zig's topic in Newbies
DPS, the guy is not talking about summiting Hood via the North Face in winter while trying to outrun a storm. He is simply talking about casual backcountry skiing, of which there is plenty around Mt Hood accessible on regularly skiied trails running off from the many parking area on Hwy 35. Have fun and go after it. -
Wrong. It is written "a discover pass is required for any motor vehicle to park or operate on any recreation site or lands..." Fight that shit! Not wrong. I spoke with the Head Ranger and that is exactly what he told me. Might want to look at the fine print.
-
I just found out. FYI. The Discovery Pass is not a parking pass, it is a Vehicle Access Pass, so if you access the park by driving a vehicle, they can charge you and they can ticket you. Thats the way it is written, like it or not. and no offense, but disregarding what a Ranger tells you is not the best course of action for yourself or climbers as a user group in general.
-
The highway runs thru the park, so it technically is part of the park, and they ticket people trying to avoid the Pass by parking there. You shouldn't have messed with Ranger Vivian, she'll get ya everytime!

Just use a locking biner on the first clip and who gives a shit about biner draw orientation. baaahahaaaaaaa

Great send! -
Glorious day at Beacon today, the winter solstice. Not a breath of wind and the sun came out. YW was still to wet to climb. Its freezing at night, and so its slick in the morning where its wet. I checked out the loose block again, and it didn't move this time, but it all right there looks like its not going to hang around that much longer.

That would be August for weather, but not the best snow/ice conditions by then.
