[TR] Beacon Rawk - The Empire Strikes Back - C1 (5.12) 3/18/2009
denalidave replied to ivan's topic in Oregon Cascades
I noticed your car there when passing by with the fam on the way to the Couve. Had I know you were there, I'd have brought your Silent Partner and dropped it off. Give me a heads up next time you are headed that way. -

Yeah, seems like the trail takes a good beating in the same few spots every year.

Another suggestion for "sponsorship" is through your network of friends, family, jobs etc. We were able to convince our employers to chip in on some food on one of the trips I did on Denali. The company I worked for gave us $500 worth of dehydrated meals and the bank one of my partners worked for gave us $1,000 and also used the story in some advertising. It was not a ton of money but it sure helped. I also second the idea of hitting up all the areas closer to home if you can't get the money for this exact trip you have your heart set on. Have fun and be safe.

Speaking of trail maintenance, a big Tree came down near the beginning, just before you get to the first stone bench and some rocks also took out a few planks again in the same spot as last year (by the little arch window not far past he green gate).

There are quite a few threads on the topic of rope soloing here and on other forums. I did my first few rope solo pitches a few months ago and found it was not rocket science but still a bit challenging figuring out a system that works well. I ended up borrowing a silent partner (thanks BillCoe) but I never truly trusted the thing. Just like any new belay partner, I was always wondering if the thing would actually catch me in a fall. (Although it seemed to work in some testing scenarios). I just did easy pitches that I have free soloed many times and found I was much more gripped doing the rope solo vs just free soloing it. Below is a link to one of the threads. Joseph H does a ton of rope soloing and would probably be very helpful if you wanted more info on the subject... I think I like his set up with the Eldridge Eddy belay device, which is very similar to a GriGri. I'm looking forward to getting my set-up dialed in this summer. Rope Solo Thread

I am not giving you that argument that pot is good for you. It is not that healthy for you or anyone to use. BUT……..to answer your hypothetical scenario question….I feel terrible anytime someone gets cancer from smoking cigarettes. But on the flip side I say……WHAT THE FUCK WHERE YOU THINKING? It is common knowledge that smoking causes cancer. I will never smoke again myself…….but I will also never tell you that you cant smoke (unless its in my house or car). As far as walking into 7/11 and being able to buy it…..you mean like cigarettes and alcohol? IMO they are WAY worse than pot. So is having tobacco legal a benefit to the greater society?
-
Very true! Good point. Although *cough* from what I've heard *cough* it's not quite the same as smoking it...
-
Dave. What a right wing conservative statement to make. Just because it is bad for your lungs, you think it should not be legal for others to do? Didn’t you mean to say “ that said its not good for your lungs, just like smoking anything else, so I don’t think I will use it”…… Take care. No, I believe I said what I meant... I don't think pot should be a criminal offense but I'm not sure it is in our greater societies best interests to be able to go to 7-11 and buy an 8-ter skater. Just like I don't think tobacco should be so easy to get. I'm sure I will greatly offend all the die-hard smokers here, but we, as a collective society, end up paying for all the extra long term costs of smoking, or obesity, etc... I don't think we need the man to regulate every thing we do but making things that are harmful easier to get cost us all in the long run. So how do you feel when someone is dying of lung cancer after smoking for 50 years and then has no insurance and racks up several hundred thousand in medical bills that is ultimately passed on to us in the end? Sure, we can go on and on about other scenarios... not wearing seat belts, being fat and lazy, eating at McDonalds every day, whatever... we can't force people in society to do what is healthy (for them and society in general) but that does not mean we should make the un-healthy choices easy either (IMO). Now, if you give me the argument that pot is not at all bad for you, I call BS, just look at the inside of that pipe/bong and realize your lungs a getting the same sappy resin too. Course, everything in moderation, right?
-
Yes, we should ban smoking chalk, for sure. I never said we should ban pot, just said it should not be a criminal offense to have/use it and that I'm not certain if having it fully legalized (like alcohol & tobacco is) in societies greater interests.
-
I always figured the laws would likely start changing in my lifetime. It seems most of the people that are so anti-pot are the aged and soon on there way out. Even most younger folks who don't ever partake realize what a huge waste of resources and human potential it has been to make pot illegal. That said, it's not good for your lungs, just like smoking anything else, so I don't think we should be fully legalizing it either. I would not be surprised if it was de-criminalized in Oregon any day now. The biggest obstacle to getting it de-classified as criminal will be the alcohol and tobacco lobbies fighting it tooth and nail, maybe the religious right too (IMO).

Pretty sure we were all getting pretty tired of you whining about the same thing over and over...

But yet you have 2 posts on the thread:-) David, would you say....was it the Near Side or the Far Side of Ozone? Def. the FAR Side of the zone. Lots of hubb-ub going on when I passed by that day. Hope he is healing well.

No worries, now that Obama is our new president, he will fix everything for us. The birds will get a bailout, the touron trail will get an escalator to the top and the south side routes will get a Starbucks at LOLP ledge, maybe even a bar.
