I'm guessing not all phones work the same in regard to re-sending a text when it fails the first time. With mine (crackberry), it shows a red x telling me the text did not go through and I have to manually re-send it, I've had other phones that just keep trying for a long time. Go to an area you know has no coverage and try texting to see how your phone works in that situation. Well worth the weight, just in case (IMO).

Dave...you are young and healthy. Why get the flu shot? I have not had a flu shot in the past 15 or 20 years. However, I got a cold about a month ago, likely the same one my kids got about the same time. A few days later, I felt better. A few days after that, it came back, only worse. After being sick for most of a month, only to have my kids now sicker than ever today, I feel it is worth the benefit to get the shot (probably too late though as I may be exposed already). Of course, I went to Kaiser to get my shots and they have neither flu vaccines. So. for now, I guess I just hope I won't get sick(er).

Now my kids got it... Both have 103 fever for a couple days now. Taking them in today if it gets any worse. I'm GONNA get my flu shots today while I'm there.

Yeah, the views suck too...

Plaidman, I took quite a few pics of you from the 1st belay anchor on our line but not with my camera. If I ever get the pics taken with my buddies camera, I will send them over. (We traded cameras while on route so I could get pics of him with his and vice-versa.) Not sure if I will ever see the pics I took with his camera though.

Jim says he was quite the bad ass back in the day. He certainly was. I miss Ken. no need to miss him - jim had him out a month or so again and i was able to See the Legend and swap some fine stories I've met him out there quite a bit lately...

I like to have mine for the clock, and it can work as a light in a pinch when you don't have a headlamp. Also, I would not hesitate to use it if someone had a broken leg or other serious injury. That said, I certainly don't use a cell phone to push climbing limits any further and calling in a rescue would be the last option for only the worst scenarios. Last summer, I was just starting the 2nd pitch on a climb when my phone rang, it was a buddy calling and asking for help with a partner that took a bad fall on a route nearby and really messed up his ankle, so I guess it can work both ways. Lastly, my phone is my business and I have done a deal or too while on route. NOT the best form but ya gotta do whacha gotta do. I usually try to turn it off but forget to most of the time. One of the few times I did not have a phone on me, my partner's headlamp went dead and my wife thought I was over due and called the sheriff. Both the epic descent and the grief at home would have been completely avoided had I decided to bring the phone along. I would have been able to call my wife from the summit, which was the only place I could get reception, and remind her when I was due back. My partner could have used it for a light.

Climbing solo while thinking you are tied in is probably the scariest of all (after you realize it anyway).
