    BAD DOCTOR!!!

How does this "sorta fit" with the homeopathy thread?
  2. I've been using static ropes for top roping for years. But one time I brought it to a "mountie" event and got chewed out and told 'no static rope top roping at club events'. Seems to me static ropes are actually safer (less stretch) and more durable. The only possible exception being if the belayer allows alot of slack to build up a fall could shock load the anchor. Discuss.

    Homeopathy

I find it interesting that many people seem to associate "natural" with "safe". To which I point out how "natural" poison ivey is.

    Homeopathy

My wife just brought home a homeopathic rememdy for teething for our infant son. Which got me thinking...homeopathy: sound medicine or snake oil? Sparay on. To get you started: http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/homeo.html

  8. He's eating mushed up banana with chopped kale mixed in - thats what the dark specs are on his face etc. Doesn;t sound very good, i know, but it just tastes like banana and apparently the kale is a good source of iron - my wife doesn't feed Nicholas the fortified rice cereals. Nothing but home made organic food for her bundle of joy And yes, he is healthy and happy - best Christmas present a dad could ask for.

  14. There is a big difference. I have the skills, experience and judgment to mitigate those risks. Clearly, you do not. I also know that it would be 100x harder to keep me and a 3 year old safe in that environment compared to me alone. It increases the risk to both of us. An unplanned night on Mt. Hood with a broken leg might mean bad frostbite and suffering for me, but death for a 3 year old. I don't want to crush your dream; i concur with most of the comments here...gain some experience on smaller peaks and work your way up, take a course, surround yourself with a few experienced climbers. Then you too will have the skills, experience and judgement to decide for yourself. I wish you luck. Please come back and post your progress and, if you eventually do it, a picture of your son playing with lego on the summit of Mt. Hood.
  15. Mt. Hood is a serious undertaking with significant technical challenges, unpredictable weather, ever-changing route conditions and objective hazards (e.g. falling rocks). People die every year on this mountain. Just because you safely climb it once, doesn't mean it will be safe to climb again...route conditions and weather may make the next outing a totally different experience. This is where technical knowledge, experience and judgment help in mitigating risk. IMO, your three year old doesn't care about Mt. Hood specifically. You will be able to accomplish your goal on a number of less risky summits. Good luck.
  16. EDS has two other similar commercials: Cat Herding and Building PLanes in the Air. I am sure they are on utube as well

  19. I agree w the sentiment to make your top-rope anchors bomber. In an alpine rappel situation, no biners would be fine. But in a top rope situation, there is a slight risk that continuous hang-dogging will create enough nylon on nylon friction to weaken the slings. And because you are top-roping, you really have no excuse not to bring a few extra biners to make this bomber.
  20. I don't think Helmut would appreciate this. Probably best to wear a helmet instead.
