No, but it's true, isn't it? Is there such thing as "private property"? If you pay off your home loan completely, you still have to pay real estate taxes. If you do not, your house will be taken from you. Sounds like the government is *renting* land to you. And who sets the rent? The government - at their "discretion". In Snohomish county, taxes would be adjusted (always up) every 4 years - now they've switched to annually. Doesn't matter to them if your salary has not gone up - just that the property is more valuable.

Crampons are overkill if you hike up in the mid-morning or later. If you get up at 4 am or so, they are nice - less slippery.

to each his own. I always have a great time when I hike to Muir (in good weather). Great views, sounds and smells of alpine meadows, being at elevation, etc. A boring hike is something more in the vein of Mt. Si.

Is it overkill to make reservations to climb the Emmons route? I'm planning on heading up there in a week or two and wonder if we'll have much trouble getting a permit if we show up Friday afternoon at the White River ranger station.

I went up to Avy Gulch 4 weekends ago, but my Beta is probably too out of date do be useful now. The Fifth Season had the best weather/conditions report when we went down there. The NF ranger's report was not as good. click here
