at least OC sprays day and night.... with some chronic sprayers, it seems they only spray between 8 am and 5 pm, when they can get paid for it. and yes, in case you're wondering... I am just jealous. I would spent all day farting around on the 'net if I could get away with it too.

Prenuptial Misgivings Prevent Me from Pursuing Matrimony

nice pics, and report, Fairweather!! that's gotta be one of my favorite mountains anywhere. have hiked to the Blue Glacier three times... twice just to see the glacier, and once, the most recent, to actually cross it and climb the mountain. way to go having kids when you're young ... my dad taught me to love the mountains all right, but ..... being 40 years older than me, he was pretty much done with hiking/climbing by the time I turned 20, cause of back problems and other shit.

nice TR. Bretherton was one of my only, and definitely my trickiest, solo climbs.. about 5 years ago. Milk Lake was beautiful.... found myself wishing I'd camped there. (camped at Upper Lena).

First of all... anyone been up it lately? How many, if any, crevasses would the glacier have this time of year? Most sources just recommend axe/crampons, but some indicate rope & full glacier gear. Also, would you call the summit scramble class 3, or "3-4"?? I've heard/read both. Some of my class 3 climbs include Washington, Stone, and Seven Fingered Jack... how would it compare to those? (actually Beckey says SFJ is only class 2, but I remember the last section being a little hairier than class 2 .... for me at least). thanks!

I think it's hilarious when one of Tom's callers launches into a tirade about how much they hate him, and then he says: "So why do you keep LISTENING to me then??" or ...... "Yeah but I must be doing something right cause I captivate enough morons like YOU to keep listening to me!!!!" And clearly, there are a lot of CC.commers who listen to the guy. Whether they love him or hate him, they DO seem to listen to him. I think me and Thinker and CBS should start a club called "Nice Guys For Tom Leykis." (well, I've never met CBS, but I have met Thinker once, and he seemed nice enuf.) I know, I know. Some may find it hard ... nay, impossible (?) .... to comprehend that a nice, sensitive guy could potentially agree with anything that Leykis says. And if so, I truly pity those with such a simplistic, superficial outlook on life. Personally.... 30% of the shit Tom says annoys me ..... 40% of it is, IMO, just plain fluff (not annoying, but still all the same)..... and then about 30% of it is just incredibly funny ... and/or just DAMN good social commentary; he has some good points to make. ...........when I've told people this in the past, sometimes they say shit like: "yeah but is it even worth it, sifting thru all the bullshit to get to that worthwhile 30%?" Well, um... Yeah. Absolutely. Can't say that I really make it a point to listen much these days (not like I use to at least) .... just sporadically, when NPR gets slow and tedious.. or when they've got a fund-drive on.

"... don't hate me cause I'm spoofable" PS... happy birthday, Snugtop. (same birthday as one of my good friends from high school, actually).

BIG misconception there about the Leykis-Limbaugh connection. You always hear that, but I wonder if people who say that have ever actually listened to either of them. I get the impression that they have a few small similarities, but a lot of differences. (Admittedly, I've never actually listened to Limbaugh..... just basing this on what I've heard about the bastard on the news.)

very cool. saw that many months ago, but never made it past the shrink scene in the beginning... seemed slow and boring, and I got impatient, shut it off. boy was THAT a mistake!!

unless you are professionally trained in giving a total stranger an unsolicited lecture about what they should or shouldn't do ....... don't do it. chances are you're just gonna piss them off and give them a general disdain for those who care about such matters, and perhaps even about the matters themselves. leave it to the rangers to do the lecturing.

one of my all-time faves.. as they say: "Gratefully dedicated to the Rogue in each of us" funny.. a few years ago I had a brief fling with this one goth-type girl... one thing (one of the few things) we had in common was our love of DG Ale. When I pointed out the Grateful Dead reference, she was like "...ewwww!!!! OMG why did you have to tell me this?!? I'll never be able to think about this beer the same way! lame!!!"

Washington State Highways-Too many cars/people
Double_E replied to MtnHigh's topic in Climber's Board
planning a trip out to the Quinault area this weekend. after reading all this (and memories of the times I've been stuck in Sunday traffic on I5)... I think I'm gonna push for leaving Quinault around 8 pm. cuz whether we leave there at 6 pm, or leave there at 8 pm, we'll probably get back to Seattle at 11 or 1130, either way. might as well just prolong the play time. -
why not donate your body to science and law enforcement? you could choose The Body Farm at the University of Tennessee as your final resting place.

couldn't find a B or a T on mine... it's a SMC Shuksan axe... definitely fairly "T", compared to many glacier axes out there, right? so.. how 'bout the side (wider side) of the shaft .... near, but not quite at, the spike? is that more or less OK for the axe? that's how I've done it in the past, the few times I've actually pounded pickets,... tho i think i'll try the above advice next time. by the way... TLG: clean out yer PM inbox.. it won't accept any more.

cute idea, IG, but ..... personally i think that would take away from the strength/truth of the message, which I think is pretty damn cool actually. Oly, don't change it!! OK, while we're sharing pics of pooches.. I don't have one, but here's one of my friend Jeff's dog, Chuck, near Lunch Counter on Mt. Adams. that dog s

nalo.... OK, since you asked ... (and since no one else responded)... I've got a few tips for ya, my young bro. hell, I certainly haven't gotten women figured out, but here's my 2 cents, from having lived and dated for 10 years longer than you. First of all, remember... if she likes you enuf, or thinks your hot enuf, she WILL sleep with you that night (and/or accept the invite for date #2), even if you skip the little formalities involving chairs and car doors. Now if it's easy and convenient, do it.. by all means, do it. But if not, don't sweat it. Actually, LawGoddess (who BTW sounds like one of the coolest, most rational and down-to-earth chicks on this whole site, ) brought up the issue re. safety when you're parked at night in a dark area... good point. That's one scenario when it's probably good (and doesn't look ridiculous) to go way out of yer way like that. Anyway, if the damsel doesn't accept the invite for date #2, or for the late nite extension of date #1, and you suspect it's cuz you didn't go out of your way with the little details and formalities..... good. Yer better off that way. She's probably a LOT more trouble/headache/maintenance than she's worth. As they said in Monty Python's The Holy Grail... run away!!! run away!!! OK. Going on a tangent here, but.... if she offers to pay half the tab (or the whole tab) ... by all means, let her. Wimmin make a lot of money these days.... if they offer to help with the tab, let them. Some will even get a little offended if you adamantly insist on paying it all (no, I'm serious). And if she doesn't offer to pay half, or if she does but in sort of a weak, half-hearted way... almost like she's just doing so as a formality... that should be a big red flag for you. IMHO. Bottom line here, with all the above..... a lot of precedents get set on first dates. So don't give any level of generosity/pampering/service/etc that you don't plan on keeping up for the duration of the.... whatever it is that ends up happening between the two of you. best of luck.

I find it baffling that some chicks will post stuff on a web forum talking about how much of a premium they place on a guy who opens the car door or pulls out the restaurant chair ...... and then on the same website, will post stuff, and even send PMs, asking [,among other people,] guys if they want to go climbing together. Do you really expect people to take you seriously as being a Strong, Upstanding, 21st-Century Woman (and therefore a viable/potential glacier-climbing partner)..... When at the same time, you're apparently living in the 1940s when it comes to car doors and restaurant chairs? unbelievable. yeah..... I'll do the open-the-door routine for my date or GF now and then, (and once in a great while I'll even go out of my way to do so)....... but if, right after I don't open a door i could have, the girl gets a pissy/hurt/annoyed look on her face ... almost like her sense of pride as a woman just got infringed upon .... that's gotta be one of THE biggest turnoffs in the world.

I have heard of two-person teams on a glacier climb using a rope with them dimensions... "ice floss" they call it. just make sure that your prussiks will hold it... the thinner the main rope is, the thinner the prussik ropes need to be. good luck.

Shasta, Thielsen, Mcgloughlin and the kitchen sink
Double_E replied to markv's topic in Climber's Board
Clear Creek was my first choice, esp. cuz of less wind potential .... wind actualy seems to be the most common reason I hear of people not making the summit. Then I talked to a Shasta guide who said that CC will in fact be a dusty scree fest this time of year. And as long as you do Avy Gulch mid-week -- which I will be, next week -- you should "only" have about 25-30 others camped next to you at Helen Lake. I'll take crowds & snow slopes (oh, and did I mention, snow slopes?) over scree, any day. I'll be camped at Helen Lake six nights from now! -

Jeezis GoddallMIGHTY, woman!!! you examine, and usually end up complaining about, every little nitpicky detail under the sun!! my advice to you ..... in case yer interested, which you probably aren't, but what the hell... GET THERAPY. stop telling a bunch of sprayers (er, I mean climbers) about your dating woes and go talk to a therapist about it all. worked for me. my current girlfriend has a few flaws, but she's also way awesome in about 1000 other ways...... and I largely credit my former therapist with helping me learn to not expect perfection... to see past a few flaws when the rest of the package has a damn lot of good qualities...... for certain reasons, this particular relationship probably ain't meant to last forever, but it has at least let me take a nice 15+ month hiatus from the dating "scene". and don't worry MG.... contrary to common misconception, going to a therapist does not make you sick, neurotic, or depressed. it makes you someone who wants to improve their life.

no cleaning tips here, but I got some preventative maintenance advice for yer next hydro-pack... put it in the fridge or freezer when you're not using it! mine stays in the fridge between outings... I haven't once had to clean it!
