Alpine cooking & backcountry recipes...Post yours!
mtn_mouse replied to Kraken's topic in Climber's Board
I don't know why you would want to extend your cooking time. Food is Fuel. Simple as that. If I go into the mountains for six days, I take six macaroni and cheeses. Easy. However most people camping with me don't like my menu. And I find I hike alone a lot??? -
Mount Fricaba via Royal Basin? anyone been there?
mtn_mouse replied to jjl's topic in Olympic Peninsula
You can view the whole slope from Royal basin, and we came down that. It would be a little steep if it was snow covered, you would want an ice axe for sure, both sides. But if bare it is an easy walk up and over. Probably the best way up fricaba is to turn south up that drainage, the one that eventually goes into deception basin, then turn east up to the top of fricaba, a rather winding unimposing summit. I did the hike with ted of talkeetna. -
No Picnic on Mt Kenya: Three Italian prisoners escape a British compound and make the first ascent of Mt Kenya. They determine that prison life is superior to mountaineering, and return to the compound.

Been right there. We went in reverse of your plan. Went to camp handy, then took the trail to the right that follows right next to the dungeness. We crossed over through a brushy meadow, and followed Milk creek up to south of 6686. We camped there, high in the basin, then continued up a short distance the next day, and dropped through the pass into Royal basin. Not technical, but lots of work. No trail up milk creek, although there looks like there might have been one at some time. Lots of work, brushy, some scrambling, but a nice hike. -
What about the Latitude? It's still open isn't it?

I am reading a book called Antarctica, and there is a four word poem at the start of each chapter. Are there any four letter poems?

I was there in October and it was open. Maybe I was the last one in. Maybe they closed it because of me!!!

So Jonah, what kind of vehicle did you race in, a mini van? Well, you probably are faster driving than someone from Washington, everyone knows coloradans, utahs, and idahons drive faster that us. -
here is another great line from minne.com..... I am a new to climbing I started about 3 months ago I am looking for a belayer as well I go up to VE at least 2 times a week...I too am in need of a partner.. if you are interested write back .... totally understand if you have already found someone. Apparently in minnesota they have monogamous relationships between climber and belayer, with intense jealosies if the belayer strays to another climber!

Ah yes, some more info from minne.com....... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At the Blue Mound Gathering Saterday afternoon I let someone use a 40 ft orange webing of mine, so they could set their top rope. I did'nt get it back and will be needing it this weekend. If you have it or know who does could you please contact me and let me know how to get it back . Thanks Mark I'm pretty sure Justin (chaps) has it. -Ian -Ian

Just wondering Chaps, for a BoyScout, you sure do spend a lot of your work day spraying on cc.com. Does your Den Mother know you are doing that?

WTF? this effort has been done before. Maybe not documented. Why all the interest all of a sudden about speed climbing and patting each other on the back. I remember people climbing rainier, hood and adams at one push. I dont remember the times, they could have even been quicker, but not being posers, they did not need to brag about the time. -
yah, that is what I was thinking...I don't have time to follow both the michael jackson story, and the Chaps saga. have to give up one of them.
-
Ok Chaps I'm sorry I just can't help myself sometimes. You've gotta understand I just got banned from ascensionist.com which is a whole different level of spray. yah, ass.com. maybe its time we get Trask to go over to the minn board!

Thanks for the advice/comments. I know with Viagra, swelling lasting over four hours is trip to the doctor. Surely a swollen knee can be tolerated for a longer period. Since it has been a while, I was inclined to use heat, but it does sound wierd, werd.

While wallowing through the snowy Wallowa mountains a couple of weeks ago, I punched through the snow and sprained my ankle and knee. Now my knee is all puffed up. I tried advil, no luck. Any other miracle drugs out there, or maybe a heat wrap?

Hells canyon is great hiking in the spring, but by June you really have to watch the weather. It can be brutal from June on, reaching temps above 114 F. This year it has been mild compared to most years ( I live next to hells canyon). It was really warm last weekend, mem day, over 100. I was going to hike with some friends, but bailed out and went to the wallowas instead. I talked with them later, they hiked into Kirkwood ranch, on the Idaho side, and had very hot temps.. They also flung two rattlesnakes off the trail with their ski poles.. Bass fishing was good thougH!. Honestly, the best way to see hells canyon is to raft. But there are some good trails. Like I said, it is a bit late to really enjoy them, but if you are seeking dry warm weather, it might work. Pittsburg landing is a short drive from Hwy 95, Whitebird Idaho area, and is open year round. It goes over a saddle and right down to the river. You can hike up six miles to the Kirkwood ranch historical site, or continue all the way up to Granite rapids, one of the class five rapids up river. This trail is easy to follow, and goes almost 30 miles. Beach camping is easy along the way, and you will encounter less jet boats that far up. Dug bar is a bad road, and most people do not drive it. There are trails in there. The Imnaha trail is flat and east, goes in on the Oregon side, and is about five miles. It goes to a nice beach area to Eureka bar, an old mining claim. There are really no trails once you hit the snake river, but it is a nice place to hang out. Hat point may or may not be open. It is over 6000 ft and is usually snowy this time of year. It may be open though due to the mild winter. I once hike from there down sluice creek to the snake in July. It almost killed me, the heat that is. 5500 foot drop, and climb out again. It must have been 120 degrees, and the 10 mile hike was brutal. I met some German hikers that were almost crawling. There are rattlesnakes there. The snake and grande ronde rivers are famous for them. There is poison ivy everywhere, black widows, thistles, stickery bushes, high heat, everything out to get you. Why do I hike there? Well, it is awesome on the river, usually quiet, good swimming, fishing, very remote.
