  1. Isn't it time we took care of the rescuers for a change? Mt. Rainier has many permanant employees, but there is only one permanant climbing ranger, subject to furlough. The rest are seasonal. These climbing rangers are the best that the NPS has to offer, and they have skills that are difficult to perfect. You won't find a permanant LE ranger working there that could pull off a dangerous rescue on Liberty ridge. These climbing rangers have no benefits, no health care, never know for sure if they will be hired next year, and live off of ramen noodles for days, the NPS doesnt even buy their food on back country trips. Mt Rainier should have 6-10 full time climbing rangers on staff. The mountain is open year round, certainly they could be of great assistance year round. Instead, people keep voting down the budgets of agencies like Rainier, and these folks continue to be taken advantage of.
  2. More likely it was snafflehound or dog meat. They routinely ran out of meat on the trip. Both Lewis and Clark got quite sick in the nez perce area, probably by eating too much raw camas or couse.
  3. I've been up Taylor before. We call it taylor. The creek flowing north into the Elwha is delabarre creek. We followed the ridge from Martins park over the top, and on to the pass between rustler and godkin. I think this pass is called bretherton pass, but alzhiemers is taking over I fear. The traverse was fun, but really slow, and tended to get cliffy. A second time, we went from martins park along the ridge, then dropped all the way to the rustler creek, and turned left and followed it up to bretherton pass. The rustler is really easy walking, and although you have to drop down a long steep wooded mountain side, it was far faster that climbing over Taylor. We exited out by dropping into the headwaters of the godkin, although our initial goal was to hit Chimney. This is a really remote area of the Olympics. Probably dead center, and you need a long time to be able to do it. You could access it from the pyrites trail off of the quinault east fork. The trail is about useless though, and present in theory only. So yes, people have been to Taylor, and it is a great spot on the OP. Go there.

  9. I have heard differently. The typical backpacking filter will filter out giardia, and microorganisms of a certain size (in microns, 25 I think) but will not filter out dissolved minerals, solids, etc. A filter for example will not filter out salt from sea water. So I would think any mine water with heavy metals in them would always be dangerous to drink.

  19. Hey Faster_ Do you have any info on someone completing that run in a day? I tried it once, and got about 65 of the 85 miles until I crapped out. Not burly enough. Between myself and three others we tried that run four times, but never actually made it in one day. Each failure became a great story. It would be interesting to hear if someone did succeed.
  20. You , Dru, are a snafflehound.
  21. We ran from Dosewallips over anderson pass, to graves creek, and on to north fork in one day. You can also go over hayden pass, up to dodger, through the baileys, out high divide, etc. O'Neil expedition did it first in 1890
