I don't see it as disrespectful, it's just telling stories. Todd was a complicated guy, driven in ways that most of us aren't. I quite enjoyed the Smoot article linked at the top, with it's underlying tone of love and exasperation. It's history, and it's pretty relevant, and hardly surprising that Todd's death would stir up memories of all sorts. Nobody's talking trash here, and it's quite interesting to hear Pope's eyewitness memories too.

I think NPR is currently running on a 13% federal funding subsidy. If public funds were cut off I'm sure they'd have to take on a more mainstream approach to advertising, rather than the "support provided by blah blah" version of advertising lite they currently use.

It could be fine, it will depend on wind and sun. A lot of the best rock gets afternoon sun, so slow starts can be beneficial. Castle Rock State Park is a little lower, the Comp Wall area is probably the warmest rock in the area with decent wind shelter. Things down in the valley like Tahitian Wall and the White Wall should be pleasant and toasty if the sun is out. Site 18 down that way offers some great warm ups if you need things in the 5.8 to 5.8 range. Hot Springs in Almo are open Th-Fri 5-10 Sat 1-10, not to be missed.

Canon Tajo, southeast of San Diego, offers some great Joshua Tree type climbing on domes along the rim, as well as the larger Trono Blanco with grade IV & V routes facing out over the edge of the plateau. Oh, that sucks. Over the years I've run into Todd all over the place, and his boundless enthusiasm was always a kick in the pants. I remember years ago in the Gunks (my one day ever in the Gunks) we were laughing and joking about running into each other out there and this older fellow came walking down the trail. When Todd stopped to ask the guy how it went, he broke into a huge smile and described how psyched was to have led his first 5.6. Todd's pleasure at the man's success and stoke were so obvious, waving his hands in the air and talking about other moderates to put on the tick list. Far from being a standoffish "magazine climber," he really empathized with the feelings climbing brings and understood that pushing your own personal limits was the same thing no matter what grade you were climbing. Say what you want about his style or undeniable bent towards shameless self promotion, he was a good person and it makes me very sad that I'll never see his goofy grin again.
