  1. Is it the fact of east coast climbers lost in the west that makes this such a national story? Is it that it follows so closely on the Kim family ordeal also in Oregon? Seems like this is getting much more attention than the usual rescue/accident incident. Which of course is not to suggest that it's ever less than a huge event to the friends and family of the folks involved, or that climbers are ever less than concerned when these things happen, it's just odd to have such a bright light so narrowly focused on our humble abode.
  2. There were 37 people in the Oregon forum at 5:30am today.
  3. Problem is that "kind word" or conversation is hard to address via written policy in a government agency. A site like this, which any number of visitors use as a planning tool, is as good a way to perform that service as any. The trick is being kind and tactful instead of the "you're gonna die you ignorant noob, go back to (fill in the blank)" attitude that folks sometimes adopt. To be fair, often as not, those from elsewhere do get treated with respect, as well as some very thoughtful responses to apparently inexperienced people posting questions (hiking to Camp Muir springs to mind as an example).
  4. Damn Mark, that sounds as close to Alaskan as you can get in the lower 48. I guess that's the new normal for at least this winter season.
  5. Hey all - we'll spawn the MLU discussion off as soon as we can (only one moderator in this forum), so in the meantime let's drop it, and if you respond to the thread make sure you reply to a post that's not linked to that topic, since it will all go in one long string. (ie, don't hit reply to this post or the one before it, but go back to The Jerk's last post) Thx.
  6. Well, I think the arguments have all been presented, and at this point there's really no where to go with this thread except down the tubes, so I'm just going to lock it and let it float gently here in cyberspace for a bit. If anyone feels strongly that I've acted in error, send me a PM, I'm open to persuasion, I just don't want to see this sink into a sprayfest. Thanks for playing.
  7. hmm, I'd assumed that was who he meant, but you're right, if the bolts are retro'd, then I think the person who put the bolts in has no special rights to consider.

    Good Riddance

Sad, but disturbingly accurate. Witness Iran's recent conference full of Holocaust deniers (including our own David Duke) to help support both their President's own denial and support their agenda that Israel doesn't deserve to exist and that the Jews brought it on themselves.

Traditionally, when you reach 1000 posts you get banned for a week.
  10. And I ping-ponged it down to Spray based on the title alone.
  11. You'll notice I got better as time went by. It's tough when an avatar is hard to read that way, like the tinkerbell with all the vertical punctuation and KK (which is merely due to my unfamiliarity with the language the name comes from).
  12. Mr Weekend seems to have come a long ways from the "how was your morning" thread.
  13. Cluck, thanks for the first hand report, as well as the work you're doing.
  14. This Friday is going to be a good day to watch out, supposedly they're having a big anti dui/speed/reckless emphasis day with lots of extra cops on the street.
  15. 123(etc), considering in your very first post here you start off calling someone an asshole, and virtually every post in your short history has the words fuck, dick, or contains offers to duke it out, you're an odd duck to pretend to be all twitchy about implied profanity in an admonishment to play nice, which was not directed at you personally but several others as well. Professional? No one pays me to deal with this stuff. If you have a sincere complaint about my actions or attitude, take it up with the Administrators here. Mods have been sacked before.
  16. You should go read this thread on Supertopo, Peter Haan's excellent first hand account of the first ascent of Wheat Thin.
  17. Just a pinch between the cheek and gum...
  18. Wheat Thin, you mean the route that was rap bolted and "comfortized" with a hammer by Jim Bridwell? Well, yeah, it'd be scary as hell to climb that on cams. Jens, have you been on that one in Leavenworth? Looks hollow in pictures, but it could just be that too much sandstone only reinforces my wussiness.

    Just for RuMR

You are a most excellent protocol droid.
  20. Oh, I think he's referring to my acronym, which is no certainly no more an obscenity than snafu, fubar, or rtfm, other acronyms in the common lexicon. I don't see the need to get all shirty about drilling times and bit composition, this thread is just a request for technical information, not a pissing match. If the babysitter is too mean for you, go tell mommy.
  21. reet reet reet CTFO peeps.
  22. Jerry Cooke from Brooklyn is Fuggedaboudit, one of the two who went for help. I'm sure hoping for a happy ending.
  23. I've always understood that those catalytics still gave off carbon monoxide, am I wrong? Be double careful and check it out E, asphyxiation would be an avoidable premature departure.
  24. Raindawg, you know perfectly well that when you refer to a debate opponent as "Sparky" you're engaging in diminution of that person's opinion. On the other hand, you haven't done that in this thread, and I appreciate the efforts to leave that stuff behind. Actually, neither RD or Pope have engaged in insults in this conversation, with the exception of a couple of responses to incivility on other's parts. This is the best advancement of their individual but related philosophies that I can recall.
  25. It's likely that she found the salacious attention here unwelcome. Pity, I liked her TR's and attitude.
