  1. I guess the basic thing works for us old salts who've never used a GPS and don't mind taping things together if need be.
  2. What's the date code on them? There was a recall for these: source

    Worst climb

I had a bad time on The Peanut on the Charlie Brown Apron up the Yosemite Falls Trail. Reading the unusual rock for holds after a summer on the white granite was tough, the bolts were far apart, and every damned one was a 1/4 spinner that was halfway out of the rock. The belay bolts were just as bad too, and the hangers packed with rotten faded tat. I have no idea if anyone has upgraded the hardware since that long ago day, rumor has it that it's not even in guidebooks anymore, something to do with the proximity to the trail. tom higgins photo:
  4. Good reality check Dwayner. Vigilante action makes for an exciting Hollywood movie, but doesn't really play that way in the real world. I remember back when I thought anyone who was a climber was okay, it was a long time ago and I was pretty naive. My favorite trailhead car is my POS 300,000 mile toyota station wagon. Oh, and serious condolences to the victim, hopefully some of his stuff will turn up.
  5. Third class mountaineering. For example: Sahale is a scramble, Forbidden is not.
  6. I'd love to see your pics.
  7. The thing to remember is that if you want to just give someone shit, go do it in Spray. This is one of those forums where a greater degree of civility is required. That doesn't mean agreement, but statements like "fuck the mounties" are way out of line. Frankly, I think announcements about where classes will be conducted are considerate and laudable, they have the same rights to be at the crags as any of us, and a proactive move to allow others to plan their climbing days to avoid frustrating surprises.
  8. I'd agree the USGS maps are the best thing for this country, I much prefer them to Green Trails and the like. The official Canadian topo maps I've used in the Rockies were pretty damn fine too.
  9. I think we should always refer to JayB as JB.
  10. Option A: he's just being a tease, reposting pics he's spread all over but doing it concisely, showing off his junk by implication but keeping that foil covered cucumber in his pants. Option B: he's lonely and wants someone to come out and play in the back of beyond, and realizes that a modest bit of promotion will hardly spoil the stew. Option C: he's just trolling you, Marty.
  11. Yeah, just look at the guy on the right who is the source of the complaint, you can tell he's looking for birds.
  12. Layback, I think he's looking for a link to some sort of organized response to this proposal, not just the Herald article.
  13. Here is Kevin Pogue's website: link It has an online guide to Spring Mountain along with a decent synopsis of cragging areas in a wide radius from Walla Walla. I've added it as a link in the RC Links sticky thread in the rockclimbing forum.

    Lurking

I had a carpenter who worked for me with this situation. When the guys at the lumber yard found out they started to call him Obi One Cajone.

You know, it's not like we're changing anyone's mind here, but there's no need to get all pissy and insulting about things. C'mon, I think it's about beer thirty

Inasmuch as they are tools used to divide individuals into "us" and "them," Religion and Nationalism are the twin banes of humanity. People don't seem to lack mechanisms for deciding who is less than human and worthy of oppression and death, but Religion has been one of the more effective sorting devices and a ready path to power. Christianity, while successful, has no copyright on this sort of thing. I'm okay with the part where it's a mythology that attempts to explain things people don't understand in a supernatural framework. Like I tell the missionaries when they make the trek up my long driveway, "My people believe we all came from frozen balls of sweat in the armpits of the Frost Giants, what do your people believe?" Stories and archetypes are interesting.

  19. Dave, thanks for the wealth of first hand information and history.
  20. Seems like this sort of thing is all the rage. This is a pretty major trunk road through the Gifford Pinochet forest. source
  21. Arguing about Marylou is so yesterday.
  22. It drove my wife (then girlfriend) nuts to have her sweet five year old son croon along to this Guadalcanal Diary song: One day a rain will come and wash the streets all clean But until that rain appears, the job is mine it seems They're looking for me, everywhere, but I don't know what for Please stop me, before I kill more
  23. Not my pebbles, but no skin off my nose either.

    HEY ALL CAPS

I had a dream the other night that I met a girl who said her name was YaYa, and I told her, "No, I've met YaYa and you are not her."
  25. Nice work
