The system you describe for solo toproping sounds viable; one I have used myself. The only drawback is that there is no redundancy in the system. Redundancy can be achieved by backtying (as in when jugging fixed lines) or, if you are self-belaying with an ascender, attaching a Prusik above or below your main belay device. Greg W
