Malden Mills: A company doing the right thing in this time of corruption
Greg_W replied to jon's topic in Climber's Board
quote: Originally posted by Dru: you gotta wonder how many of those prisoners are making bongs and shivs and stuff with the metalworking machinery... I knew a guy that taught welding to inmates at a prison in Indiana. I asked him the same question and he told me that each inmate had to check out an exact number of welding electrodes and pieces of metal and check back in the same number or they would have to turn over the whole place until everything is accounted for. Probably a similar practice here. All-in-all it sounds like a good program. I am sure the pro-union parasites hate it because they can't get in there to organize. However, the inmates are being paid and some of that offsets their burden on us, the taxpayer; gotta like that. Maybe I'll hire an inmate to post on cc.com for me so I can get more done at work...or the other way around. Greg W -

quote: Originally posted by Dru: Seriously, how many ex-cons do you think end up going to work for other biner manufacturers??? In 'biner manufacture, I am sure workers learn basic machine shop skills, blueprint reading, etc. These are all transferable skills. Plus, it takes their mind off of the "drop-the-soap" game in the shower that morning Greg W -

Slightly off-topic, but several people have brought it up: What is the background on Omega-Pacific using prison labor? On the surface it sounds like a good idea; at least they learn a trade. Greg W -

[OP, as you may know, makes their stuff in the USA, but in PRISONS ] MM rules! Be a smart consumer, buy your stuff at indie shops (or MEC, sorry, love that place) and make sure that both the materials and the end product were made in labor-friendly countries, USA being one of them!! Hooray for Malden Mills! You're not going to start singing "Look for the Union Label" are you? -

Apparently since I have bought gear from Shoreline Mountain Products over the past two years, I am now eligible to join the AAC. My question to you guys is: If you are a member, why do you feel it's worthwhile? If you haven't joined, why not? Greg W

Ice axe as nut tool, when your partner takes off on the next lead carrying the only nut tool.

Lambone (aka gymrat), I want to know how you can climb any of that without tape showing which holds are in. Actually, thanks for the beta; that will probably go on my list. Greg W

quote: Originally posted by trask: Saran Wrap as emergency condom. (Usefull when stranded in tent with the opposite sex; or in Greg's case, with a goat). Hey, that was never proven. You can't convict a guy based on a skittish farm animal smeared with a sticky substance (gu packs explode at altitude, I swear).

quote: Originally posted by erik: actullay greg, omegaman was once a prisoner at the spokane prison making biners and what not...though he came into good light with the warden and the ceo of op. i guess they all dated for awhile(speculative rumor) he is now out living his dreams spending the cold hard cash that omega steals from the prisoners from their slave labor....apprently he has quite an expense account as op steal so much money from the slaves, let along their souls and hearts, so the profit margin is through the roof....bah the chinese we have you beat in spokane!! i bet he wears fur and eats processed meat too!!!! Sounds like a regular capitalistic, red-blooded American that we can all look up to. Screw Barbie and Ken, I'm buying my daughter an OmegaMan for her birthday. Greg W

On an additional note, we climbed the original start to the 2nd belay of "Dreamer Direct"/"Urban Bypass" (per Matt Perkins' topo) in one long pitch, simul-climbing for about 30'. We did this because we really didn't know any better, but we liked it. I found out later that most people use the "Safe Sex" start. This original start is good climbing, just remember you'll have to simul a bit. Greg W
