I was initially even more shocked by this, but I just read that #1 stoppers are only rated to 2kN (~440lbs). I'm still surprised though - especially that it failed at the cable rather than the stopper itself shearing which is how I've always imagined those small stoppers failing under heavy loads.

Yes, but one can climb the east ridge direct (3rd/4th class rock scrambling) and avoid the steep glacial bits of the classic "east ridge route" (which is actually more like NE I think). The traverse of the glacier to get to the base of the east ridge involves some hopping of small crevasses, but I've done it unroped, so it ain't that bad.

Ruth Mountain, Silver Star Glacier, Eldorado East Ridge. Closer to Seattle: Mt. Daniel. edit: the dog routes on the volcanoes would also be good options (South side Hood or Adams, or, with slightly more serious glacier travel: DC or Emmons on Rainier, Coleman-Deming or Easton on Baker). Sitkum Glacier on Glacier Peak would be a great option, but I think the approach is pretty frucked up at the moment due to the big washouts last fall.

I had a Lowe Alpine Adrenaline jacket (piece o' shit) that leaked like a sieve so I mailed it back to Lowe Alpine for a warranty replacement. That was in January. After about one phone call per month, on average, I finally recieved a replacement jacket a couple of weeks ago. But wait! It's the wrong fucking size! After four days of calling "Matt" at Lowe Alpine, "Oh he's not here right now, would you like his voicemail?" and leaving messages, I finally just ranted at the receptionist lady. She checked the inventory and they don't have any Red Medium jackets, which is presumably why Matt decided to send me a Red LARGE jacket. Close right? So now I have to go to the post office, mail the wrong jacket back to them (at my expense) and they will send a Black Medium jacket. If I wish, I can send them a receipt for the shipping cost and my credit card number and they will reimburse me for the shipping expenses. I am not impressed.
