1) Snow is porous. New fallen snowpack is 90% air. So there is exchange between the cave and the surrounding snow. 2) You keep shovelling out the mouth of the cave and making a hole, or at least poking a probe, or stick, or shovel out through it.

There's two whole sandstone canyons that aren't even in the guidebook if you want to have real adventure. The climbing in there is pretty fun too.
