  1. What is your factual basis for believing they are the "weakest binding"? No doubt. Just how is it you figure dynafit is the weakest binding. I knew some of you wouldn't like that one Since the toe and the heel pieces aren't one unit, a softer flexing ski or a big impact can pre-release a boot - not to mention lower din settings than a Freeride or Naxo.
  2. Tennis balls in the DRYER - not in the washing machine.
  3. I guess that makes sense to match the heaviest, burliest AT boot with the lightest, weakest binding.
  4. The Epic shell is MORE breathable than any laminate (Event or Dryloft). The fibers themselves are encapsulated with silicone, eliminating the need to glue an additional membrane to the facing fabric. You now have one layer of material vs. three layers (including glue). When dealing with breathability issues with heavy down parkas the discussion is only relevant with respect to the parka drying out from an external heat source (the sun)...not drying out from your body heat. In order for vapor to escape there needs to be a temperature gradiant present to drive the vapor through the outer fabric. If the heat from your body reaches the outer fabric...well the parka isn't doing a real good job of insulating you from the cold. The only time you're going to be wearing the parka is when you're standing around...not climbing - so sweating shouldn't be that big of a consideration.
  5. What do you call a broken boomerang...? A stick.
  6. Whether it's 12k or 14k, you could still get spanked pretty hard in the winter on any of the volcanoes. I would be comfortable taking a Volant up in the winter, but a Frontpoint certainly wouldn't be overkill. Fill weight is one of a few factors when determining the warmth of a jacket. You can get a 650 fill jacket to be as warm as an 800 fill, but it'll be a bit heavier.
  7. How old are they? How many days have you skied them?
  8. Nope. I'll be there mid-February as well though.
  9. I second the Bridgestones. I switched from the Firestones on my Taco to these and have been pretty happy with them.
  10. If you're pretty competent with your heels locked down, switching to tele is not going to be that bad. With modern gear, parallel turns are pretty easy to fall back on in the manky stuff.
  11. ummm...maybe because they aren't made for skiing?
  12. Butterfly knot, figure eight...whichever knot you choose to tie off a small bight a foot or two in front of your harness. Use it to quickly clip a fallen partner off to an anchor.
  13. A trick that someone showed me when travelling in 2 person rope teams (or any number of people on a rope for that matter) is to tie a butterfly knot in the rope between you and the other person. After setting the initial anchor, it's easier to clip off the fallen climber to the loop (rather than setting up a prusik or ascender), transfer the weight to the anchor, then fiddle with equalizing the anchor with two free hands.
  14. That thing looks like a prop from "Braveheart"!
  15. I'd go with a down bag as well. The Parbat isn't going to be enough - you're pretty much going to be living in your parka while you're kicking around basecamp so I'd make sure to bring the right one.
  16. Ummm...practical for putting on at the base of a comp. route or packing into the m10 project you're working on.
  17. I might take him to the Big Four ice caves.
  18. She can call it sandstone and it would still be okay with me
  19. If you're assuming those kids are over the age of 12, then yeah...that's fine. If they aren't, then I think it's too much. But whatever - Pete's right anyways.
  20. Brand spanky new K2 Piste Off 170cm (blue top sheets) w/ 1 year old G3 Targas. The perfect ski for a beginner or an excellent light weight touring set-up. $250 OBO - take a look at them at Feathered Friends.
  21. IMO that might be a bit much for that age group.
  22. Count me in!

  24. All season tires will work fine if you can't buy two sets of tires. Get good chains though.
