  1. The boy was found the last I heard (ok but with hypothermia). My cousin (step) was missing around Christmas a few years ago, and it was all over the local news. I went in to help find him (Mt Index) after a big snowstorm, and mountain climbers who never knew him or his two friends where showing up to help. They never said no to the help, and many parties showed up to volunteer. In the end his best friend, best man at his wedding, and brother found them at the base of a avalanche fan three weeks later. The news crew and local search and rescue group had a ton of trouble finding them. It was too late for them, but they never said no nor stopped anyone from helping. The Search and Rescue group said it was too dangerous to search, but we found it to be normal conditions there. Thank goodness they found this boy, and too bad the S&R turned down a offer of help from locals that knew the terrain.
  2. Amen Snow-muncher on that last comment. I was the first into the hut, and I too didn't think of the others (didn't smoke) and didn't care at the time, but yes, it can offend others. We all go into the mountains to get away from the crap down low. No one that climbs is a evil person in my opinion. PS Scott is a cool guy, really! 3. The Marmots I saw were taking acid! not drunken.
  4. MN- My climbing buddy took too much acid and tried to tell me the Smurfs were really aliens! He was telling me he saw them come out of a spaceship.
  5. quote: Originally posted by lambone: Put the bong down when you type Bill! I wish I had a bong after what Scott said....no I am glad I didn't have one. I was there, and AlpineK is cool, offered me bud--thanks, but no thanks, so is Scott, or the others that were there. It is too bad that we can't all enjoy the mountains just the same. We all go there for the same reasons, but just express them differently. I admit that when it comes to typing it doesn't come across as effectivly as when said in person Bone.
  6. What I hate the most are those idiots who throw their cigs burning in all out the car window On going to the Tetons last year the burnt grass (no relation to the potters out there) on the side of the road past Boise was embarrasing where they told you to call 911 for fires, that obviously scorched the side of the road every 50 yards!Put them out and avoid the $550 fine! Shit! I got into it with a "volinteer firefighter" who put one across my car in rush hour traffic. Talk about job security. 7. Not being a pot user, Sometimes people who hate pot hate it not because they have "Virgin Lungs", but maybe they hate it for other reasons, like maybe something to do with the past, and have left that far behind. One of my friends Dad's was a pot user (very heavy) and he has zero respect for him now. He hates pot, and anything associated with it. It is not just the burning of the eyes, it is a whole life in the past. I don't hate pot, but I don't like it either, and I am sure that Scott wouldn't mind if it was done outside, it was cold and a little windy there on saturday, I think that it was just it being in the hut, an enclosed area. If I was a smoker I probably would have gone outside, but I didn't go outside and didn't smoke. Just because friends don't like smoke don't assume that they are Lilywhite and that is why they are strongly opposed to it. Also the handicapped bathroom was almost as good as the hut, and it was the only bathroom open....man those tax dollars!
  8. Yes, that is Roman, He usually has a Tyrolean hat on, and he is Mr. Mt Si (Italian: "mounta see"). He is out there when it is crappy while the young are sitting there playing the Gameboys! Usually he is on the backside of Si, which is the same route that Jerry takes his plastics on.
  9. One thing about older climbers is they have a ton of stamina. Being in my mid 30's, sure the 20's can beat me to the next ridge, but most stop there, while I go on. My first Rainier in a day was with a 60 year old guy that was tough. I think it is attitude backed up with endurance, and I don't think that 60 today is anything like 60 forty years ago. It actually gives me hope about doing this 20 years from now. Bronka is one tough lady, and a good resource for weather beta.Another friend who is 74 goes up Mt Si all the time, he is slowing down a little, but he has been up there over 2000 times...sorry JERRY, you don't hold the record in your plastics. 10. MN-- These were not Seattle cops! They are ok and I climb/scramble with some of them. These are Issaquah cops, and yes, there was traffic control there. Issaquah has more SUV's that fight for parking/line spots very aggressivly, and it would require a cop to maintain the peace. The Issaquah police are bored, and troll the p-lots for criminals in their spare time....just ask my old roommate (aressted!)--they should work and try to catch those Tiger Mtn breakins---a couple of miles from Krispy Kream. PS--if you worked at Dunkin' Donuts, no wonder!
  11. from Broncos qoute: On the way home, I went back to Krispy Kreams thinking it certainly would have cleared out by now, to find still and hour wait. Bronco: JERRY and I went there at 11:15 and the police told us it was an hour plus wait (drive thru), and I asked him what the longest it has been since the opening: he replied "six hours!"...In the distance someone yelled the cops should have free donuts....Reminds me of the beany babies and cabbage patch dolls....why didn't you save me one JERRY! PS nice meeting you all. [ 11-07-2001: Message edited by: To The Top ] [ 11-07-2001: Message edited by: To The Top ]
  12. Raise the back a little to make room for the side pipes and traction bars. Also the naked girl mud flaps.
  13. What about Bellingham? They have a good program at WWU, and you wouldn't have to pay the out of state tuition fee.
  14. Went up Granite Mtn today, saw snow at 3000' (wet), and once to the high point for us at 5200' there was atleast 18" and drifts over 2 feet. Oh yeah, the sun was out. Anything above about 4500' seemed to not be melting @3pm. Winter is coming. Bill
  15. Uncle Tricky, Man I had the same thing happen. I talked to those infantry guys, they were really drunk. Yes I went to the wedding reception too. I went to the other place, and bummer, I missed the group, there were only a few there, and I missed them. Back to the other place and I sat at the bar and ate a burger. I should have gone back to the other place! I'll go to the next one. Sorry I missed it. Bill
  16. Scott, did I see you (in plastics) with Scooby the crack (rock that is, not drug) sniffing dog on friday that totally wet day on Mailbox? TTT [This message has been edited by To The Top (edited 10-24-2001).] [This message has been edited by To The Top (edited 10-24-2001).]
  17. quote: Originally posted by JERRY SANCHEZ: I WENT UP MT. SI THIS PAST WEEKEND Jerry, I think I saw you guys with Plastics--Your dog was sniffing everyone. What route did you do?
  18. I saw on another website that a ice axe was found at the Colchuck trailhead this last weekend. PM me on details of getting it back. Bill [This message has been edited by To The Top (edited 10-23-2001).] [This message has been edited by To The Top (edited 10-23-2001).]
  19. Carolyn, For me if you are doing long snow slogs, volcanoes mostly snow, or really cold conditions, go plastic. For long approaches on trail or whatever, then some travel on snow or glacier, go leather. I can never seem to really keep them dry for long in all snow, and get a little heavy. I don't do much ice, but some, and think plastics were better (no pro at ice). My best leathers were bought here at Second bounce aka second ascent. Don't get railed into buying new, I never have and have been very happy with the purchases. Bill
  20. I am currently reading Twights book, and so far it is very good. As far as other good books out there: Nanda Devi by Johb Roskelley Thin Air by Greg Child Eiger Dreams by you know who Agree with the Dave Roberts and Simpson books Atlas Shrugged is on the to read list The Art of War by Sun Tzu Guide books too, especially Beckeys Bill
  21. Wow, leave the computer for a while and there are 56 posts on this! I met Jon Krakauer at a book signing for into thin air, he seemed humble, and I think he was using a portion of the profits from the book to help people in Nepal with schools. I liked Eiger Dreams the most out of all his books. When Thin Air came out it hit the public, with this I always told people to read Anatoli's book to get a balanced perception. He is no Abbey, but Abbey didn't write about climbing.
  22. Hahaha..I know what you mean...We went up that ridge and made it, but not without a few pieces of shit coming down. Another party went the other way, and both got there at the same time. We went down the other way and it is wayyyy easier. Beautiful climb. Bill
  23. The one that made great impression on me was Dome Peak, right in the middle of it all. Bill
  24. Went hiking up Granite mountain today, There was a good coating starting a 4500' and was 3" at the top, and it was pretty winterery up there. The chipmunks tails were thicker than normal. Go snow! Bill [This message has been edited by To The Top (edited 10-08-2001).]
  25. Captn- Went to Marymoor at 5pm and your house at 7:30-8pm. I didn't meet up with you (no big). What is still left to sell and do you want to set up a meeting time at MMoor later? Bill
