Lets not forget, too, that the U.S. has violated the spirit of the treaty in how we have manipulated where and when we seek to prevent lawful nuclear development, and we've violated the actual text of the treaty where we have failed to pursue disarmament. We've also resumed testing and development, and we're talking about militarizing space in violation of other treaties. I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if we've set somebody up with a couple of nukes in violation of the treaty too! Are there any arms control experts in our audience?

I'm looking forward to seeing some of you folks.

I'd be a little cautious to urge everybody to think they can or have a right to pass any slower party. Also, as ChucK points out, just because you catch up to and wait for a party in front of you does not mean you are any faster or more competent then they are -- every popular route has its bottlenecks where parties tend to wait for others. Passing in the middle of a climb can work out OK if handled properly and with the right attitude, but it can make things very complicated and everybody has varying levels of comfort with sharing ledges, anchors, etc. It can be a great way to make a serious mess.

I've climbed the route and ChucK's beta is good. We did the start labelled as "The Pillar" in the Sky Valley guide, and it didn't seem too bad to me though I don't really mind 1/4" bolts on 5.9 slabs if I'm in the right frame of mind. I led the 384v "Green Lycra Crab Traverse" variation at the top, and this seemed OK as well. Expect funky bolts for any face climbing, because I don't think anybody has upgraded them.

Have you ever been up there? If you hike downhill from anywhere near the top of the mountain you will end up nowhere near the ski area and you'll go a long way down the hill before you hit any road. Not that it is that hard to follow a trail or, in snow, your tracks leading back down, but people get lost up there fairly regularly.

Layton's first two photos are not actually the Enchantments (Dragontail is sort of the Enchantments). Here's JayB's photo: Here's one from scotteryx: That's the enchantments. If you're going to Prusik Peak, check it out.

Marie- Read Timmy's note at the top of the event's forum. You are probably not "banned" from events, but your post is awaiting moderator approval. The site has been reconfigured to help promote user input for the front page, but Timmy didn't want to open it up to unmoderated posting there, so a couple of forums have a new level of scrutiny added.

No pics and not much debauchery, really. Porter's son almost caught a bunny and it would have ended up on the grill if he had, and a homeless guy offered to share his "wine" with is if we'd lend him some money. Somebody sipped a beer but it wasn't a wild kegger or anything. While cooking garden burgers, we entertained ourselves with a slack line and then when it got dark enough we showed slides ranging from protests outside British Parliament to ice climbing in Canada, the 1935 Silver Skis race at Mount Rainier to the 2005 crag clean-up at Index. The precursor for this event was hosted by Julie Brugger in the '80's, and was an annual thing for many years. After a brief hiatus, we're back.

Allright then, I gotta go get Gary and the projector system, so I won't be able to get there early. We are at the same place as last year - right next to the horseshoe pits.

We still need some hot drinks and a light. I've got an MSR stove and a pot in my car, but I was hoping we could be a little more upscale than that. Can somebody pick Gary up? I'll be at the Picnic Shelter around 6:00, setting up. I'm looking forward to seeing some new faces along with the old ones.

Things we need: 1. Light. I have a couple of extension cords and some small lights, but a halide construction lamp would be nice. 2. Gary. Can somebody pick Gary up in the U District abouti 6:30? He's bring a screen and digital projector. 3. Paper Plates. 4. Charcoal. I assume somebody's going to have read the invitation and will bring something to grill. 5. Coffee or Hot Chocolate. Anybody have some of those big catering outfit servers?

Weather Service says: Good thing I reserved Picnic Shelter number 6. It is large enough to hold an army. Maybe we'll have a light show (lightning) to go with our slides!
-
I swung by Picnic Shelter #6 tonight, on my way home from work. The outlet is powered up, so we'll be able to show slides. Anybody bringing a side dish?

Josh: You sound totally in love with and in defense of all things Microsoft. Is there perhaps some connection here?

I think it may be more than half a rope length if you rappel directly off the summit, but maybe 50 feet west I think it is less. I didn't see any anchors because it was covered in crusty snow when I was there, and it was only slightly scary downclimbing it in ski boots. There is a moat right there, so you are not worried about taking the big ride, but it could be a nasty little fall.

True that, and in some ways I'd say Orbit is a "harder" climb than Outer Space.

I'd have to say that it seems to me that WordPerfect has been a far better program than Word, in every release for the last 15 years (I haven't tried the latest versions of either).

I think the start of the pitch is harder than the "crux." It is a wide hands/flared offwidth kind of thing over a little bulge. Either way, it is not a fearsome lead. You can completely sew it up. In fact, the biggest problem people have with the pitch is that they put in too much gear and cause rope drag. Try not to put pro very high on the part below, or consider back-cleaning, before you go around the corner onto the diagonal traverse. I think Eric8 is referring to the thin finger crack three pitches above, and I agree that it is probably harder than the "stated" crux, though you can bypass it as he notes.

I'm having serious issues with Outlook and IE both right now, so I don't think it will likely be worse with Firefox - at least in the short term.

English translation? I'm think of switching to Firefox. What would I be missing that I actually care about?

Anybody want to dredge up that picture of him with the sock stuffed in his harness?
