Pro Mountain Sports Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Take a look at this new product by Switchback Packs. Quote
cracked Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Strange idea. Why did outer-frame packs get dropped again? Seems like these packs wouldn't climb very well. Sure, they are -proof and waterproof, etc, but they are ridiculously heavy. It looks like they would be good load-carriers, but wouldn't suit climbers very well. The support must be good, but at what price? And the only way to open the thing is to take the entire back off. That means that EVERYTHING falls out, right? Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 I voted nay because I am skeptical about climbing in tight conditions with one on. Quote
COL._Von_Spanker Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 So you pack all yer shit in, but what happens when you put it all on and the thing is half full? Now all the weight is at the bottom and it's sliding around and what not. Quote
cracked Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 (edited) True, but the packs would be nice for carrying skis on an empty pack. An intriguing idea, but I think it won't work. I am reluctant to vote, however, as the idea is cool, and for canyoneering and snaffle-fests it might work. Then again, you need a snaffle-proof tent too. Edited January 16, 2003 by cracked Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 So, let's see, here. If the straps on the back blow out for whatever reason, there is exactly nada holding the pack closed, causing everything to fall out, as noted by Cracked. Also, for the alpine jet-setters, good luck using one for a bivy sleeve on your fast-and-light attempt on the Jingus Deathbox Couloir. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Also, if the fucker breaks, how you gonna fix it? Good luck sticking the broken pieces back together with nylon patch material. Quote
erik Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 JUST LIKE YOU FIX YOUR OLD LADy FDA.... DUCT TAPE Quote
gregm Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Tough enough to prevent small animals from chewing through container. i kinda doubt it. Quote
cracked Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Depends what a small animal is. can be pretty huge. Does a bear count? Quote
thelawgoddess Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 I voted nay ... cavey, if anyone was gonna vote yea i thought it'd be you. just fill it up with beer and ice and you'd be holding the best summit parties in the lower 48! Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Dear Erik, You are hereby warmly invited to go and stick your head in the toilet. Your friend, Dr. Flash Amazing Quote

Dru Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Why carry ice in when there is snow on top???? What the hell kinda stuff do they teach you at law school there anyways Ally mcBeal? Quote
iain Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 how to order a half-double-decaf-half-caf 101 Quote
thelawgoddess Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 it's been awhile since i've been outside. is there actually snow out there? i don't drink coffee - ick. in law school they teach you how to say nothing in more words than you need to and in a way that nobody else can truly understand what the hell it is you are trying to say. that and how to bill $200/hour for it. Quote
thelawgoddess Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 real lawyers have secretaries for that. Quote
wdietsch Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 but they are ridiculously heavy. you aren't kidding .... 3750 cu @ 6 lbs 14 oz ... for climbing it would be a piece of shit ... rafters and canoist (sp?) might like it Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 The switchback pack is totally lame. I vote nay. The only situation where it might be okay is pack packing down to Cape Alava or Sand Point where they have all those raccoons. And you'd have to prove to me first that a raccoon couldn't bite his way in. Quote
cj001f Posted January 17, 2003 Posted January 17, 2003 AS a climbing back, it's lame yes. For traveling or canoeing it'd be cool though. Quote
Bronco Posted January 17, 2003 Posted January 17, 2003 It'd be a better weapon than the soft pack. and you could use it for a helmet in a pinch, it would probably deflect rockfall better than a softie as well. I wonder if you could use it to protect your ass while glissading, use it kinda like a sled. Quote
Attitude Posted January 18, 2003 Posted January 18, 2003 real lawyers have secretaries for that. Real lawyers have computers to check spelling, and secretaries for other activities. Quote
slothrop Posted January 18, 2003 Posted January 18, 2003 Naw, it must be awesome to climb with one. Look at the photos on the site: That's some climbin', that is. And at only $400, it's a steal. Way better than just strapping a cooler to your back. Can't rats chew through lead pipe and drywall? Why would some plastic stop them? Check this out: "Future releases will include lighting, hydration & heating accessories." I think that means you'll be able to make a hot tub out of it. Quote
