Pete_H Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Yup its the fault of all those rich assholes who don't pay taxes and don't need roads because they fly everywhere in their diamond-encrusted heli-choppers. Quote

It is not the first time it have happened. Quote
ivan Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 the state has hardly managed to pay its teachers the past 5 years and has more on less totally given up on its parks, hardly a surprise... Quote
glassgowkiss Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 The last time this bridge was inspected was ...... 2010. Hardly a surprise, since this is one of the busiest stretches of highways in this state. Quote
olyclimber Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Sounds like the bridge wasn't necessarily the problem as much as an oversized truck hitting it that took it down. Not saying that that a better designed bridge couldn't have prevented this...but that was the case. The oversized load would have made it through ok if it was driving the inside lane. Human error. ScottP Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 This bridge was designated by WSDOT as 'functionally obsolete'. Uh...yep. Quote
olyclimber Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 The "functionally obsolete" rating could be given for a number of reasons, many of them not necessarily related to structural integrity. But, thats neither here nor there with the bridge in the drink. It will be interesting to see how long it it before there is even a temporary solution in place for this particular roadway/bridge. It is insane to think about the amount of traffic and lives that will be screwed by this situation. Quote

Probably Rudy should speak up about it, since it's his field and he would be one of the most qualified people to talk about the subject. My thoughts are, that if one truck can collapse the bridge, it is an outdated design. It also could be a combination of the design, fatigue of the material and human error. Unfortunately looks like a loss of life is also involved. Quote

AlpineK Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Bridge collapse and Washington State go hand in hand. We haven't had a good one since the Lake Washington floating bridge sank. Then there was Hood canal in the 80's... Quote
olyclimber Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 don't see any mention of loss of life there Bob. Maybe you know better than the talking heads.... Quote

AlpineK Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 The best part about Galloping Gertie was the dude Washington State gave bridge insurance money to pocketed it. Bridges never collapse, well almost never. Oopps Quote
Whatcomboy Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 The local business owners are already crying the blues about loss of shoppers, especially Canadians. Heck, this will be good for business. Think of all the high paying construction paychecks buying new pickups. They should knock a few more bridges down. Only way the politicians are gonna fix anything these days. Quote
genepires Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 fast food joints and gas stations along the detour around the bridge will be liking the added traffic. Heck, maybe they even caused the whole thing. Quote
