The last time this bridge was inspected was ...... 2010. Hardly a surprise, since this is one of the busiest stretches of highways in this state.

Sounds like the bridge wasn't necessarily the problem as much as an oversized truck hitting it that took it down. Not saying that that a better designed bridge couldn't have prevented this...but that was the case. The oversized load would have made it through ok if it was driving the inside lane.

The "functionally obsolete" rating could be given for a number of reasons, many of them not necessarily related to structural integrity.

 

But, thats neither here nor there with the bridge in the drink.

 

It will be interesting to see how long it it before there is even a temporary solution in place for this particular roadway/bridge. It is insane to think about the amount of traffic and lives that will be screwed by this situation.

Probably Rudy should speak up about it, since it's his field and he would be one of the most qualified people to talk about the subject.

My thoughts are, that if one truck can collapse the bridge, it is an outdated design. It also could be a combination of the design, fatigue of the material and human error. Unfortunately looks like a loss of life is also involved.

Think of all the high paying construction paychecks buying new pickups. They should knock a few more bridges down. Only way the politicians are gonna fix anything these days.
