wfinley Posted January 12, 2012 Share Posted January 12, 2012 When on the west buttress in 2001 we topped out above the fixed lines to encounter a Russian guy wearing a leather vest over a gortex jacket taking a break to smoke a cigarette before continuing up with an obscenely heavy pack. wfinley Posted February 6, 2012 Share Posted February 6, 2012 The Russian attempt on the first winter ascent of K2 was abandoned today, when Vitaly Gorelik died of heart failure in Base Camp. Gorelik and partners Valery Shamalo and Nicholas Totmyanin made it to a highpoint of 7200m on the South-Southeast Spur, and descended to Base Camp by February 2 with bad weather in the forecast and frostbite on both of Gorelik's hands.
