mattp Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 Last night I was watching some of the men's downhill, and they kept said that the course they called "grizzly" had slopes of up to 75 degrees. I listened carefully and they said it at least two or three times. I watched a couple of racers, and there terrain rolls where the course looked as if it might approach 40 degrees but I saw nothing as steep as Snow Creek Wall (I would estimate the latter to be 70-75 degrees). Lambone Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 I think what they meant to say was that the slope had a 75% grade. There is a big difference. I noticed that too. NBC sucks(except for ER ) [ 02-11-2002: Message edited by: Lambone ] Quote
roger_johnson Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 That is exactly what I heard and saw. In fact they had a small fuzzy graphic of the coarse and it showed a pitch of 74d at the top and near the bottom! It sure didn"t look like the racers were practically free falling. But then again, these are OLYMPIC skiers; they are GOOD. Quote
Lambone Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 The didsplay on the TV screen showed 74 percent, not degrees. The announcer said degrees though... Quote
Matt Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 No way could the slope be 75 degrees. They have to be able to groom the slopes and run a cat on them. On 75 degree slopes they would have to belay the course setters from one gate to the next. There's no way anyone could ride a cat up or down 75 degree slopes. Quote
erik Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 heres the link to the course, there are no notes on the steepness of any one specific area on the courses http://saltlake2002.sonheavy.com/venues/sno/ Quote
Dennis_the_Menace Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 I personally like the curling competition. Man... I don't know how they keep from getting hurt. Not to mention the mental stress. Quote
gregm Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 it would be pretty cool if they had curling on 75 degree slopes Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 If you can do the "sport" drunk and while drunk do it better then it's not really a sport in my opinion. Fairy ass curlers [ 02-11-2002: Message edited by: Cpt.Caveman ] Quote
specialed Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 Curlings great because its pretty humurous that a drunk, overweight, middle-aged man can become an Olympic gold medalist. [ 02-11-2002: Message edited by: specialed ] Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 I dont find that humorous. I find it boring and pathetic. It shows the true degradation of Olympic sporting standards has fallen. Quote
philfort Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 I saw news segment yesterday about bridge as an Olympic sport. It would be completely laughable, if they weren't so serious about it. Like, people are totally serious about trying to get bridge to be an olympic sport. WTF??? They even had several people proclaim it definitely to be a sport. Even the guy doing the news segment called it a sport. They were talking about it, because the bridge World Cup is going on in Salt Lake right now, and its somehow involved with the Olympics. Canada won the men's team competition (woohoo!) Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 I dont know what bridge is but I get the impression it is for wimps and losers. Quote

I caught that as well. Pretty funny. Not to take anything away from the skiers though. Those dudes are nutso! Quote

Phil, Your mom does not count. I am talking to a climbing group of friggin people here. I would expect more comments like "Bridge a sport! Fuck the Olympics! " More hostility would be great! Quote
allthumbs Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 The Olympics are still being held? Why? Quote
philfort Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 quote: Originally posted by Cpt.Caveman: More hostility would be great! I absolutely agree! I just wish someone walked on the set as they were filming the news segment, and started yelling someting like "what the fuck, are you guys demented dis-illusioned morons? You could play bridge from a hospital bed, etc... etc....." The 75 degree thing was driving me nuts too. These guys have no clue whatsoever. Also morons Quote

allison Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 I am having a hard time with stuff like half-pipe in the Olympics, but there's something delightful about speed skating, the good old downhill, ski jumping, you just have to look past the commercialism. I also have issue with this 70 degree nonsense. Questionable. And what about that stupid video they showed last night explaining the DH course? With the parachute and the graphic of the skier on the car? WTF? The new, revived event of this year, the "Skeleton" looks like it should be way badass. Think about going headfirst down the luge course on a cafeteria tray.... Quote

Beck Posted February 11, 2002 Posted February 11, 2002 Come on all you Olympic naysayers, the Olympics are about international competitions of the best atheletes a country has to offer- it's not about the commercialism,or how cool a sport is- these atheletes are some of the most dialed in humans on the planet in their respective disciplines- Rebalagiti exceptions occur in every sport though. Sure, TV coverage of the Olympics degrades the competition, but doesn't TV kind of do that with everything? And Allison, BTW, skeleton sledders are absolutely INSANE. I rode a skeleton in Lake Placid and found luge to be a calm, controlled sport in comparision. Skeleton sled runners don't even have edges and the sleds are 90 pounds of steel and lead. Quote
