JayB Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 "The next time you're engaged in a political discussion with someone who has very strong views different from your own, ask them if they can name two famous thinkers or politicians whose politics are opposed to theirs who they also think are very smart and genuinely concerned with making the world a better place. If they can't, it's not clear they are able to grant the good faith such discussions should have." Robert Reich, Barney Frank Quote

j_b Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Anyone who fathomed that attacking Iraq was a good idea cannot be "genuinely concerned with making the world a better place" or is a fucking idiot. That should take care of 99.5% of right wingers. So your criteria are not only wanting for that kind of reason but even if any of you met both these criteria, it still wouldn't make you necessarily civil. Civility also demands a methodology of discussion, like for example addressing all relevant arguments. Quote

I agree with j_b on this one. so much of what is passed off as 'discussion' or 'the exchange of ideas' is really just changing the subject, leaving out important information or ideas or treating 'assertions' as though they were 'facts'. Take the bonehead, for example, who started the 'If' thread... Quote

What's your preferred sedative for family gatherings, cocktail parties, and general social interactions, BTW? Envisioning old Uncle Ron venturing forth with a mild political joke, hearing "REGRESSIVE!" in his one good ear, and instinctively ducking just in time to dodge a flying drumstick.... Quote
