The chinese efforts remind us once again of how technology can reduce a great mountain to where it is almost nothing.

Sad...

What technology are you bitching about?

The only two items mentioned in the article are the torch, which was basically a canister stove, and the broadcasting gear. Live satellite feed Everest climbing was actually started by Westerners.

they shoulda lit the flame w/ a tibetan's fart while simulatenously beating a darfurian kid to death w/ a baby panda bear

i woulda tuned into the live broadcast for that

So it looks like Addidas and La Sportiva sponsored the event, would that change your view on these companies ?

it wouldn't change my opinion much on the nature of companies, no. i think i can guess where all the shoes those boys sell are made too...

IMHO that's a much better way to show national pride than invading helpless countries like Grenada, detonating test nuclear warheads, or performing one of a host of other military muscle flexing scenarios.

Besides, if anyone gets frostbite you could just use the blue flame to quickly thaw it. If they are too far gone and need to be amputated you can toast up a tasty protein supplement...

The fact that they used oxygen (a performance enhancing drug) ties in quite nicely with the Olympic spirit.

Anyway that peak was more likely Rum Doodle than Everest :)

Shit, anybody can climb Everest now. If a fat biker from LA, with enough metal in his body from surgeries to set off metal detectors from miles away, can pay $50k to have some kiwis short rope him to the summit and get him down safely with a broken hand...

chinese television station at base, internet cafe's, trash piles...

WTF is Everest now? It's a joke. And I find that sad.

Now we got the chinese summiting with a token Tibetan woman and a large candle... It's disrespectful to what was once a great mountain.

If I ever go back to Everest, it'll be to help clean up that mess

JMHO of course.

You are the liar!

Go China! I'm very proud of that I am a Chinese.

I think this event is great, shows a great spirit of strength and unity.

The torch of the Olympics is a symbol of peace and love when athletes come

together....

Study history, not the media. The truth is not to be found in the television broadcast. Please feel China by yourself not by Distorted Media Reports.

I've watched Chinese government officials run Tibetans off the road and deny that they were responsible for shelling and destroying Tibetan monasteries.

The Chinese Government (not necessarily the people) are a bunch of fucking assholes.

As to a few comments trying to compare our treatment of native Americans you really haven't paid much attention to the big picture. Yes Americans behaved badly, and some continue to, but there are many nonnative Americans that have devoted a lot of time and effort to making, "indians," lives better and making our government straighten up. I have family members that devoted time and effort for this. If this were China the Chinese government would have had them shot.

Mazegirl,

I respect the Chinese people but not the Chinese government. Tibet is being destroyed by Chinese Government policy and military force. It is no different than when the Taliban destroyed the 800 year old buddist statues except that more buddists are being killed in Tibet.

I look forward to the day when this older regime dies off and the Chinese gov stops killing people for practicing their multi thousand year old traditions.

No I have not been there but I have spoken with Tibetan refugees.

I suggest you do the same.

Be proud to be chinese. I can understand that...

But nobody could really be proud of what the chinese are doing in Tibet. Nobody in their right mind that is...

Well, wherever she resides, she is obviously a nationalist. Nationalism is dangerous, and for a time we saw it on the rise in our own country. I think it is waning now in the US as more and more americans see our own terrible mistake in iraq.

I'm only a little sorry this thread has turned political, but it was not unanticipated...

I hope to be able to get back to the mountains soon, and kick some steps...

I know I've read that before. Is it John Muir?
