They'll teach you not to carry toy guns anyway.

It's true - I can't sleep, read the Climbing mag and a chapter or so of "Titan", decided to just stay up so I made some coffee and here we are.

Curriculum choices for students, who are to be called Cadets, range from SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) through prison guard, water rescue, paramedic, fireman, professional demolition and emergency response operator, according to a Board statement.

I've had my fill of EMT and fireman training & duties. I'll take a helping of SWAT and professional demolition.

How is this much different than other military schools? I'd say the concept is the same.

Additionally, if the British had gotten a little more exercise and training, they might not have gotten their asses kicked clear to Dunkirk by the kids pursuing 'Strength through Joy'.

Why is it that villains who populate the superhero universe are all insane? And, why is the authority of law and order glorified and elevated as the highest ideal?

I used to love this show

They got to drive classic 70s vehicles too.

Me too, it was my favorite when I was about 6. Good thing I never actually got the play SWAT gun set I was begging for or I'd probably be dead by now (see related thread about toy guns killing people).

We're both right, actually. Thank the NRA for the functioning weaponry, as they were key players in getting small arms from the U.S. to Britain in a hurry.

British government advertisements in American newspapers and in magazines such as The American Rifleman begged Americans to "Send A Gun to Defend a British HomeÐBritish civilians, faced with threat of invasion. desperately need arms for the defense of their homes." The ads pleaded for "Pistols, Rifles, Revolvers, Shotguns and Binoculars from American civilians who wish to answer the call and aid in defense of British homes."

Pro-Allied organizations in the United States collected weapons; the National Rifle Association shipped 7,000 guns to Britain.

in retrospect i was being over zealous in saying that this is wrong perhaps....it would be over zealous if it was a state run highschool for homeland security. then it would be the goosestepper youth.

i still think it is weird to have a highschool for homeland security though, even if it is privately run. i think it is a little different than a private military academy highschool in that it is so focused. i have always though private military academys as teaching mostly the diciplinary and "boot campish" elements, rather than actual military skills such as hand to hand combat or how to drive a tank or fire artillery. but this is a school focused on highschool aged kids to teach homeland security? its like rent-a-cop highschool or something.

regarding evergreen:

"Founded in 1967, Evergreen was formed to be an experimental and non-traditional college. Faculty issue narrative evaluations of students' work rather than grades, and Evergreen organizes most studies into largely interdisciplinary classes that generally constitute a full-time course load."

I wonder how one could say that experiment has faired (outside of that recent debacle, which was the act of specific people, but is perhaps the type of person attracted to the school?)?

The debacles are many, and are often instigated by staff including at least two mass expulsions from Mexico for illegal interference in elections there. Of course, Rachael Corrie's parents see things differently, but I can't help think that poor girl would have had a wonderful life had she been offered more balanced curricula. And lately, things have just gotten downright ugly in Olympia--and all roads seem to lead directly to The Evergreen State College. I think some profs and staff owe the public an explanation.

Now...you were saying something about a privately funded school that appears to offer a focused, albeit narrow curriculum directed toward internal security? I guess I'll agree it's odd--but at least we're not paying for it.

BTW: I only recognize four names on your list. I'll bet most other state schools produce superior alum lists annually. I also see a whole lot of "activists".

Judging by the image

The woman looks like she's laughing as she walks by her wrecked company (police) vehicle. Perhaps she'd have a different attitude if it was her vehicle.

You don't like Evergreen Fairweather. You've stated that a few times. I'm not sure what to say. The college runs the canopy crane down in the wind river forest south of Mt. Adams. That's a pretty cool thing. I got a ride in it once. They do a lot of interesting research.

On the other hand I don't like hippies, and they have a few down at the college.

Fairweather, no doubt you feel the same about WSU where they had that massive riot 10 years ago over the important issue of on campus drinking.

The crowd then attacked the officers from all sides for two hours with rocks, beer bottles, signposts, chairs, and pieces of concrete, allegedly cheering whenever an officer was struck and injured. Twenty-three officers were injured, some suffering concussions and broken bones. Reports of students and onlookers injured ranged from four to 12. Three people were arrested during the melee.

Recently, we had a double homicide at Ft Lewis over extramarital jealousy.

Davila, 22, is charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice with two counts of premeditated murder, one count of kidnapping, one count of burglary and one count of obstruction of justice.

Probable cause documents say Davila killed the couple in their Parkland, Wash. home Saturday because she was angry an ex-boyfriend left her to have a relationship with Randi Miller. It's believed Davila shot the couple multiple times, and then poured acid on them in the bathtub in an attempt to destroy the bodies.

Davila took the couple's daughter, but when she was questioned by a friend about why she had the girl, she allegedly admitted she had killed the parents.

In fact, military personnel commit domestic violence at a rate 3 to 5 times greater than the civilian population. I think we oughta shut that operation down too, it's a huge waste of public dollars.

Face it Fairweather, you've just got an ideological axe to grind with regards to TESC. If you really only recognize four names on that list, I'm a little embarrassed for you. add:

Off White, internet gumby

to that list of alums. That'll make it five.

Alumni--like you and Matt--should be embarrassed by the recent crop of students and profs. Activism/peaceful protest is OK. Promotion of anarchy isn't what the vast majority of Washingtonians are paying for. Write a letter. Save your school.

Hey: be nice. He's right: activists really suck. People who love to deride others and call each other names on the Internet are way better.

I believe we call those people impotent activists :grlaf:

The WTO protest of 1999. What do you remember about it? The majority of folks were ok but some agitators pushed things over the line. I'd be hardpressed to blame the business damage to hardcore political groups rather than some criminal opportunists who took advantage of the situation.

You would think that Evergreen is some hotbed of radicalism that serves as a gathering place for the training of potential unlawful enemy combatants.
