rob Posted February 8, 2008 Posted February 8, 2008 I need to get my daughter more time on the rock this year. My main goal is to get her comfortable with being lowered. I am planning a 3 or 4 day backpacking trip with my son this spring. Any good suggestions? I was thinking of heading down to the Gila National Forest. I spent a month backpacking there when I was younger -- quite beautiful. I'm planning on start my 13 yo nephew climbing this year, too. Gonna be a busy year! Quote
cheamclimber Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 I'm planning on soloing the cheam range traverse, climbing Yak Check, slesse NE butress, Baker N ridge, Rexford East Ridge, and a trip to climb Sir Donald NW Arete. yay! Quote
genepires Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 First overnighter backpack/camping about 2 hours from the road at washington pass. Heck he is only 9 months. Quote
rob Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 We took our kids camping right away, too. Totally the right way to go, they love sleeping out now. Quote
Bug Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Olivia has her heart set on Rainier. June 27-30. Quote
catbirdseat Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Climb at Suicide/Taquitz Rock for the first time. That and climb lots at Joshua Tree and hit the high Sierra for the first time in 18 years. Quote
RuMR Posted February 10, 2008 Author Posted February 10, 2008 not for you... ....what are the goals for KIDS... Quote
denalidave Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Get my 4 year old (5 this summer) her first harness and shoes and get going on some easy stuff. We hit the local tiny rock gym the other day. Anyone got some kids shoes for sale. I think she wears about a kids 12US/30EU size. Quote
pink_chalk Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I don't have kids.... yet Do boyfriends count? *LOL* Kevbone! Lets hear what you have in store for the little Milestar! Quote
johnh Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 My daughter (age 10) is going through the Shasta Mountain Guides intro to mountaineering course in June (Mom insisted). She hits the treadmill everyday after school getting ready for the course. She did great on Rainier (http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/697989/fpart/3) this spring and can't wait for Shasta. Quote
strumpett Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I plan on taking my child on hikes this summer. Lots of hikes! Quote
Dechristo Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Got one of my sons-in-common-law blazing on ice Quote
Peter_SS Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 We are getting the kids (3,5,10) out for hikes most weekends. City kids love the woods so much it is wonderful to see. I am taking my 5yr old son out this summer. I am looking for places to go. Near to home would be nice. (98006) My son struggles on the rocks at Marymore in Redmond but flies up the wall at Vertical World. Suggestions? Quote
Peter_SS Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 I am a little slow on the uptake. Please expound. Quote
Peter_SS Posted April 6, 2008 Posted April 6, 2008 Oh silly me I should google before I post. I found the jr rockers. I don't mind the gym. My kids like it but it is a little rich for my blood. Quote
ken4ord Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Well this year we have gotten Simone out camping once, there are sure to be many more camping weekends. I also took her on her first safari. She was ok for the first four hours of game viewing. She was really cute, pointing out the animals, she especially liked the hippos and giraffes. I also need to finish her climbing wall, maybe this weekend. Quote
tomtom Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 little rockers and junior program... Well...FWIW i can't stand organized climbing...it goes against everything that attracted me to climbing in the first place... Quote
RuMR Posted April 30, 2008 Author Posted April 30, 2008 somehow, to me, your tool organization doesn't really stack up against a first rate competition team (team vertical world) or youth climbing programs...also, they don't hog outdoor cliffs or preach doctrine... I love watching a mountie leader placing 8 pieces in a body length on a 5.4 taking well over an hour to lead 70 feet... Quote

I love watching a mountie leader placing 8 pieces in a body length on a 5.4 taking well over an hour to lead 70 feet... 8 pieces in 6 feet? over 70 feet that's 90 pieces of pro. He must have a huge rack!! Quote
RuMR Posted April 30, 2008 Author Posted April 30, 2008 he was spooked at one spot...part of what took him so long was that he was out of gear at the top and was frozen with fear... Quote
rmncwrtr Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 We'll be camping and doing lots and lots of hiking. I'm hoping to get some climbing in there for them too and will probably sign them up for another climbing camp like last summer since they had fun doing that. It'll be a different kind of summer for us though. Our kids won't be going back to their school next year. I'm going to give homeschooling a shot and doing it year round so we can have more flexibility when we take time off rather than a huge chunk in the summer. We all love to ski so having more time off in winter will be very nice. Quote
RuMR Posted April 30, 2008 Author Posted April 30, 2008 that is awesome...i've considered that, but my job and my wife's won't allow for it...also, i don't have the ballz to actually go for it in the sense that i wouldn't want to mess my kids up... Quote
