Nelly Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 How many climb with a helmet all of the time, some of the time, or none of the time? Quote
Gerg Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Pre-1999 No helmet sport climbing Helmet trad climbing  Post 1999 Helmet all times  Note: since starting to wear a helmet full time, it has saved me from serious head injury at least twice--once due to rock fall, once in a leader fall that resulted in my head hitting the rock and breaking the helmet Now I don't climb without it.  Cheers to helmets! lizard_brain Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 At all times. My doctor says I need to protect my brain cell. Quote
fleblebleb Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Since seeing accident at Vantage, every single time. Much sooner go climbing without a harness. Quote
mattp Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 I have had two friends fall and smack their heads while leading, resulting in temporary coma's and brain surgery and stuff like that. I don't understand why everybody thinks it essential to wear a helmet while riding a bike, but most climbers seem to think it is only necessary when you anticipate the possibility of rockfall. Quote
b-rock Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Actually, I hate wearing a helmet on my bike... Quote
JoshK Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Yeah, I'd agree. I consider my chances of avoiding hitting my head while riding my bike much better than during climbing. I wear my climbing helmet all the time unless it's something really trivial. Quote
chris_w Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 I wear mine all the time, even sport climbing. I've seen too many accidents from either rock fall or other peoples stupidity. Â One time at exit 38, I almost got hit in the head by another climbers helmet that somehow came off. Maybe they didn't read the instructions. Â I also wear a helmet while biking and Snowboarding. I got a few scratches\dings in each. Quote
jkrueger Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 I always wear a helmet for trad. When sport climbing, I only wear a helmet on bad hair days. Quote
Dru Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 i wear a helmet when  1) alpine climbing unless i forget it 2) ice climbing unless i forget it 3) trad climbing in the Rockies or at Vantage, except for the first time I went to Vantage when forsome reason I thoughtthere was rock there instead of choss....OK I only went there once but I would take one if I went back, which isn't likely... 4) caving (which I have only done once because if God had wanted us to crawl around in a hole in the ground She would have given us FLIPPERS!) 5) meteor shower is happening 6) at work during visits to active logging, trees are heavy... 7) riding bike 8) construction work 9) dumping and chasing, high-sticking, grinding and cross-checking in the corners, moving in on goal with a quick breakaway, he shoots.... tomtom Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Trad climbing: Yes Sport climbing: Yes Ice climbing: Yes Bouldering @ UWRock: No  Yes, I'm a gumby. I have my name on both the front AND back of my helmet. Helps with body identification.  No advertising stickers, though. Quote
forrest_m Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 i dropped my helmet near the top of an alpine climb a few weeks ago and did the last few pitches bare headed. i felt naked. really. Quote
Figger_Eight Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 trad: yup sporto: sometimes ice climbing: yup alpine: yup slogging: nope bouldering: nope  I heard somewhere it still makes more sense to wear your helmet on the drive to the crag...but what do I know. Quote
Matt_Anderson Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 single pitch - no. multi-pitch, solid rock, no one above me, no Multi-pitch, all others, yes. vantage - yes Quote
thelawgoddess Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 i don't think there's any rhyme or reason to when i wear a helmet. i tend to mostly when i'm trad leading ... but not exclusively and not always. hmm. Quote
sk Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 I have a helmet, I figure I can put it on if I feel like I might die Quote
iain Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 so if you wear a helmet sport climbing do you wear it in the gym too (if you go to a gym)? Quote
Figger_Eight Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Only if I think I'm going to start head butting people. Quote
fleblebleb Posted August 20, 2002 Posted August 20, 2002 Bah, gym climbing is neither. It's kinda funny that this place is so trad centric that the only jokes we ever get here are trads making fun of sportos - I don't remember any posts with sportos making fun of gym rats. It's like, hey, there's a piece of the food chain missing  Anyway, I'd climb in a gym if somebody bought me a membership - but I wouldn't wear a helmet anymore than I'd wear one for calisthenics or a jog.  [ 08-20-2002, 04:54 PM: Message edited by: fleblebleb ] Quote

IMAM Posted August 21, 2002 Posted August 21, 2002 I always wear a helmet, even if I am just doing "difficult" scrammbling. Its a risk-reward thing and the risks of not wearing one are far greater than the rewards. I rather be "the hand" than not wear a helmet. Â Just for the record: I don't wear a helmet in a rock gym, Marymoor wall, etc. Quote
Dr_Flash_Amazing Posted August 21, 2002 Posted August 21, 2002 Helmet on when: - trad climbin' (yeah, DFA does that on occasion) - sport climbing at Maple Canyon - posting on cc.com Quote
